Hi Everyone,

I've just got a job up in Barrow in Furness, and not knowing the area at all, I'm looking for some tips on where to live/where not to live smile

Ideally I want to be within walking/cycling distance of the BAe Site, but other than that I don't really mind.

From Rightmove there seem to be thousands of victorian terraces to rent, but I was hoping to find out what areas to avoid etc...

Cheers,

Fatboy

Anywhere less than 5 miles from BiF that isn't too intolerable?

Ulverston doesn't seem as bad. Although i haven't stopped there long enough.

All you have with 5 miles is the sea really

Barrow is not that bad to be honest.
It happend to me many years ago. I was offerd a job for 1 week which was extended and have been there ever since. 16 years.

Hmm? Think you get less for a life sentance now biggrin

No seriously its not that bad especialy in the villages on the out skirts.
What I would do in your shoes is book into a hotel for a couple of weeks just to get to understand the area. The Gables hotel on Abbey Road is very good. Its frendly with good food and clean accommodation.

A lot of contractors stay there and its about 5 mins bike ride to BAe.
Once you find your feet you will soon find a place to stay.
The areas around the Hospital (Furness general) have some good places and the area is very nice.

Believe it or not the weekend night life is also good. Just get down cornwallis street on a fri or sat. Localy known as "the garza strip" but don't let the name put you off its as freindly as you want it to be.

And don't forget you are on the edge of the lake district. Lots of roads with very very few speed cameras.

Thanks for that reply :-)

I've got some contacts from the Buddy system, and I'm popping up on Friday to look at a couple of places, but I was thinking about B&Bing it for a couple of weeks etc - I'll look into The Gables hotel...

Pretty good actually - found a nice place on Barrow Island, which I've taken (Landlord seems like a top bloke, which is pretty important!- I move in next Saturday). Bloody handy for work!

I spent a couple of hours wandering around Barrow, and it seems fine to me - though I'll bet there are a lot of areas that are an absolute fker to park in at the evenings! Town seemed alright at first impressions, but that may change on a miserable day smile (I was there on Friday, bloody nice day)

Cheers Dude,

Lived there for 36 years and it fine. Can get a little lively on the strip at weekends but no problem really.

First of all congrats... there's nothing quite like standing underneath 16000 tonnes of Vanguard Class boat to make you feel small smile I spent the first 2 years of my career there, on the grad scheme just like yourself. (now moved south and to the air business)

Barrow island is pretty easy for work, any idea where you'll be based on site?

Cheers for the response - you down at Wharton now?

I don't know where I'll be on the yard yet, but I'll be in Project Management.

I've actually taken a house on Barrow Island, just next to the school - hope it's not too ropey smile (it seemed OK when I did my walk rounds last friday)

Looking forward to getting started!

Hi,
just spotted this thread.
What is it you do?
I live in Barrow but work away in Ellesmere Port as a Draughtsman.
Barrows fine as long as you understand the craic.... be prepared for a lot of tongue in cheek abuse.
Im moving to a new house shortly, you could have rented my old one!
If you fancy a pint and a chat to a fellow petrolhead then just say.
Obviously if we are both in town at the same time.

Hi Derek,

I'm just starting, so don't know exactly what I'll be doing yet, but it'll be project management somewhere within the Barrow site.

Talking to some of the locals Barrow seems OK - as you say, it's all about settling in to a new area smile

I've just taken a house on Barrow Island, so it would be great to meet up one day and have a butchers at either your Chimera or the Rover(s) smile

Are you in Barrow permanent now then?
Im home Friday afternoon, will come show you the Chimaera if you like.
The Rovers have been sat in the garage for years now.... so sad.
I spend all my time on the TVR now getting it ready for drag racing starting next month. Ive had a couple of good weekends testing at York.

I'm on the Grad scheme, so I'll definitely be at Barrow for the next few months, if not the next 2 years.

I know what you mean about the Rovers - I've got a Mini in much the same state in my Mum's Garage frown

I won't be up in Barrow until Saturday evening, but I'd love to have a look at the Chimera!

Cheers,

Fatboy

The Island isn't too bad, and it has a lot of practical advantages, one being walking distance from 'the strip' hehe

I'm at Warton, Samlesbury, Farnborough - take your pick smile

You'll love it - Project Management isn't too bad, even in Submarines where things tend to happen very 'slowly' compared to a Tyhoon build. Make sure you see Scotstoun as well, that's a good site, although if you feel the need to move into the air sector at some point (and why shouldn't you!) then you'll need to look to Samlesbury/Warton.

Have you seen the vertical builds in the DDH yet? That's something to be seen smile

I figured living on town would be handy for the first few months at least hehe

I've not even been on site yet! Dying to see the inside of that fk off huge hangar, the vertical build sounds amazing...
