HI all...

I'm in need of some recommendations for a good pub in the Chesterfield/Bakewell area..

WE're meeting some friends there on sunday, so are after a good pub that does good food, with a nice friendly atmosphere..

not too 'foody' (no nouvelle cuisine one noodle and half a prawn type things), but not wetherspoons either..

any ideas greatly appreciated!

thanks

Piers.

missus used to work in the red lion, on the matlock road halfway-ish between chesterfield and matlock, always a nice place and do a good selection of carvery etc on Sundays. I've not been for a while, hopefully reputation is intact!

big car park so P&J should fine parking in there

Huntsman Inn (clicky)

It's a regular meeting point for the Westfield guys, I've eaten there once with that crowd and also had lunch there on New Years Eve . . not overly posh, but not 'buy one, get one free' either . . just an allround good friendly pub.
Food was ace, scenery is stunning, road is immense, what more can you ask for?

I know I'm posting this too late now, but one to bear in mind if you are up there again (or anyone else who is reading this thread) is the Cock & Magpie. It is located in Old Whitington which is about five minutes from Chesterfield.

It's located next to an old thatched coaching station and the food is fantastic. The staff are very friendly and made us feel very welcome when some of my family moved to the area.

That huntsman inn one is (quoted from google maps) 50.2 mi – about 1 hour 6 mins from chesterfield!! :O

Cock&Magpie one looks great.. if only it'd been in time!
We ended up going here:

as recommended by the Times Online guide

...but in fact weren't that impressed.
The atmosphere was nice, and friendly, but the place needed tidying up a bit, and the food was ok rather than good.

I shall try and remember the Cock&Magpie for next-time!

Worth it though . . . fab roads and great food!

Although, I'll generally find any excuse to go a bit of a mad drive! smile
