I don't know if anyone has seen my other post about renting a house on my list of areas to consider are Macclesfield / Alderley Edge and Wilmslow areas.

Now I know the area quite well and one of my best friends lives in Nether Alderley so I'm not at a total loss with the area.

Anyway onto more important stuff, whats it like to live there, I know the surrounding roads are great smile but towns themselves are they a good night out etc.

I'm currently in Derbyshire and while I do like it and am considering staying at the same time I'd like a change that isn't too far away, added bonus being I know a couple of people!

So over to you, is there any regular PH meets? Area? What to do etc.

I've lived in Alderley Edge / Wilmslow for all my life. And I like it! Both A/E & Wilmslow have a number of 'trendy' bars with varying age groups. Thank fully the HogsHead in Wilmslow has now closed and replaced with a Tapas Bar. The Sam Finney must be due for a re-furb soon - your feet stick to the carpets as you walk thro! Rectory is ok but gets packed at the weekend and during Uni holidays, as does the Lloyds Bar - both near the station.
There are a few more bars and eatery's on Water Lane near the Aston dealership, plus Pizza Express opposite Hoopers. Also worth a mention is the Kings Arms with the Chilli Banana - excellent Thai place and needs booking to get in.
A/E seems to be having a resurgence at the moment Est.Est.Est is busy but service hit & miss - unless you're a 'celeb star'. The Braz near Alderley station has closed and waiting for new investors - that will no doubt be trendy for while!
There are other places like the Bubble Room (currently being refitted), La Vina Tapas Bar, plus plus plus. You'll never get bored!
Fav rental areas in Wilmslow have tended to be on the Summerfields Estate - its ok (lived there for 10 years) but it is out of the centre a bit - good local pub being the Unicorn. Try and get south side of town if you fancy Wilmslow. Can't comment on Macc - just work there!
Getting out of Wilmslow in the morning traffic wise is easy - but getting thro Alderley Edge can be a REAL pain during peak (school) times.
Go for it!

Thanks for the reply! I know some of the bars up there and have had a few really good nights out. smile

Not too worried about traffic as such, Matlock, Ripley and Belper are all bottle necks! So I'm used to that. frown

For two small towns A/E and Wilmslow seem to have a lot going for them, decent bars, shops and 20ish miles from Manchester, the search could well and truely be on. I don't actually know Macclesfield either, at all, just been through it! Imagine it to be same sort of set up (as A/E / Wilmslow) just a bit bigger, am I right?

Yes Macc is bigger - much more of a Town than Wilmslow or A/E. The road system has b..red up the place though, and not as quaint- Prestbury tho, thats a different matter again!

My new profile:

Current Car: 1986 Porsche 944 2.5 8V Lux
Previous Car: 2000 Porsche Boxster S 3.2

My car To do:
Sort Sunroof (Sorted!)
Major Service inc. Belts etc. (Booked)
Fit New Seats (Picked seats)
Make more track focused ... brakes and suspension (Picked what I'm going to put in)
Refurb alloys
Full Respray

Well what can I say seen as I'm on my second one, I'm now a fully paid up Porsche fanatic, nothing will make me leave this marque and up until a year ago I loathed Porsche, yes really see some of my earlier posts! Drive one and it all changes, be careful they're so addictive you'll join the fold in no time!

Whatever next toy your looking for give me a bell, I can find one for you! Or if you are selling a car likewise, I can professionally market and sell the car for you! You could be quite surprised how much more you could get for your car!!

All the PHer's I have met though have been great and the Midlands lot are a good bunch, run outs are always good even if the weather isn't (peaks is one of the best) so if your round the Midlands come and join us.

Mostly into (car wise):

Porsche - All apart from Cayenne

BMW - Would love an E30 M3, wouldn't love a 318i

Alfa - Especially pre 90's Spider

TVR - All of, none I wouldn't have

Lotus - At the request of crackthatoff, I do like them, the Exige being my favourite, in white. Thankyou very much.

Performance Jap stuff - I have a lot of respect for Supra's, RX7's etc. but please don't put silly bodykits on them

Others include - Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, Other exotic Italian cars and anything a little different....

It's not what you drive ...... it's how you drive it!

Now, back on topic, then do you know anything about Macclesfield, Alderley Edge or Wilmslow? smile

Alderly: Used to be a nice picturesque town where the satanic mill owners tried to gentrify themselves. Sadly ruined by the amount of new development and the footballer and wanna be rich image. It saving grace is that it has really decent chip shop (unless its been converted into a yet another trendy bar in the last year or so) .

Wilmslow: Home of the double income and two kids brigade. The towns speciality is estate agents. Watch out for places which claim to be in Wilmslow but are actually in Handforth. Handforth is next door and has a large 70's council sink estate.

Macclesfield: Home to a very expensive furniture shop but most noteably home to the famous (infamous) 80's band The Macc Lads. A bit more down market than the other two and less pretentious but trying to be more pretentious rapidly. It wont succeed until its got rid of the PoundStretcher.

I have lived on the A/E, Wilmslow boarder for the last fourteen years and can’t complain.

The downside is that (present company excluded) it does seem to attract a lot of ‘I’m all right jack’ weekend millionaire types who lord it around town. Consequently house prices are around 20% dearer than most other places in the North West. But not everyone is like that. It’s also been hit hard by the nationwide flat building boom, with many old houses and plots being built on.

On the positive side there is loads of great countryside just a few minutes walk away. Traffic isn’t too bad (and will become better when they complete the bypass), and the crime rate is well below average. It’s one of the few places in the country I am happy parking the Ferrari up on the road. If you’re a petrol-head there’s always something interesting driving about. Transport links couldn’t be better with the M56, Main line station and Airport all on your doorstep.

Good Luck

Julian

edge and wilmslow are expensive.
macc is my second home, im always there. its cheaper than other two has some nice areas and some less than nice. moss etc is a poor area to move to. outskirts, bollington, prestubury is very nice.

in general there good areas, but wouldn move into centre of macc. i may be doing but due to cost and where everyone i kow lives. tho dont knwo where im putting the skyline.

We don't call it Kuntsford for nothing you know. hehe

Nicola, both Gerry & I have lived in all 3. Wilmslow as others have said is alright for bars, restaurants and shops et al. Though over the last 5 years it does appear to have gone a little bit downhill. Lots of little chavs drinking in the likes of the Bollin Fee & Waverleys (or whatever it's called now).

Alderley Edge is MUCH nicer, the Bubble Room is a cracking place and there are equally some lovely restaurants. No 15 wine bar, London Road, Bar & Grill and as someone has already mentioned, the Chippy is ace too.

We live in Macc now (right at the bottom of the C&F - handy), the reason being, we couldn't afford to buy anything in Alderley Edge. Macclesfield is definitely more of a town but with that, you also get a larger amount of knobs. That said, I very rarely see much trouble in the town centre. In terms of places to go out, Ronnies Bar is a relatively new addition to the bar scene and it's a cracking place. Probably the best in Macc to be honest. Loads of restaurants, The Chilli Banana is as good as the one in Wilmslow. Papadams curry house is also bloody good!

All in all, any of the 3 wouldn't be a particularly bad move, it all depends on the budget you've got & what you actually want for the money.

To give you an idea, we rented a big 2 bedroom duplex apartment above one of the shops in Alderley Edge high street, it cost us £500pcm fully furnished (but not to a very good standard). My bro and his missus have just moved into a 2 bedroomed apartment in between Wilmslow & Handforth and I think it costs them £550 but it's much more modern. Something equivalant in Macclesfield would set you back around £400ish.

If you wanted to trial run a night out, give Gerry a buzz (I think you exchanged numbers at bt&p - though I could be wrong) and we'll take you out and show you the sights.

Apologies for butting in here chaps but we're looking to buy in Macc at the moment, are there any areas you would recommend we avoid ? Seen a house in Broken Cross area that appeals, also a few on Congleton road nearer town... I've avoided a few on Buxton road as the temptation to head off into the hills at every opportunity would be too great biggrin

I found Macc town to be better than expected too fwiw, although we've only been there Sat. daytimes so far.

I work in Kuntsford too, so Macc is handy for commuting, traffic aside...

Barry, broken cross is a nice area but you're right, it's a bit of a distance from the town centre.

The only council estates as such are Hurdsfield, Upton Priory & The Moss. Hurdsfield is probably the better of the 3. Everywhere else is pretty residential.

It all depends what you're looking for, you'll get some nice, good priced terraces close to the town centre or if you go a little further afield, you'll get the semis & detached properties.

You're right about living at the foot of buxton road, every time I go to Tescos in macc (300m away) it takes me half an hour going via the C&F wink

It certainly is. We tried the Maliwan Thai on Sunderland street last night, whilst the food was as good as the Chilli Banana, the service wasn't great. I know where i'll be going next time. wink
