yeah, if you venture a little more towards the Lake District you'll be much more happier I'd say. Keswick/Bassenthwaite areas are nice and tranquil with many B&Bs.
Even Cockermouth.
But the west coast can be a bit harsh with that freezing sea breeze smacking you in the face and I always think the area looks a bit 'run down'.

A few years back I reguularly had to work in Carlisle, but used to stay at the Pheasant in Bassenthwaite and had a brilliant spirited drive over the hills into Carlisle every morning. They were just farm tracks really with not another vehicle in sight until you got to Carlisle.Even Cockermouth.
