Morning all smile

In September I'm moving over to Lancaster to go to Uni, put a deposit down on a room in City Block yesterday smile However as I can't get accomodation on campus, I'm not allowed to take my car on campus. I've just spoken to the council and they can only offer me a 'commuter style' parking permit which is £735/year, and being a student I very much doubt I can afford that yikes . And if I'm honest I doubt I can live without a car. Anyone got any reccommendations on what to do? Is there any way to get round this or are there any car parks/areas I could use cheaply or for free?

Also whats Lancaster like generally?

Thanks smile

I am from just over the water in Morecambe. Lancaster is a bit dead out of term time but in term time it is great for nights out etc.

As for parking, you are right in the city centre so will struggle. There is some on street parking but i believe there is a time limit.

Which Cityblock are you in? The one next to Revolution or the one behind the Police Station?

I live in Lancaster, not far from the uni either, we are right on the bus route into town.

If you want I'll talk to the old man, we have plenty of room on our drive.

PM me and I'll see what I can sort out, I'm just heading out of the office now but I'll get back to you in the morning.

Bob smile

City Block 2, the one thats not above the printers? Haven't worked out where Revolution is but it seems to be pretty popular, everyone uses it as a reference point when explaining things hehe

Revolution is probably the best spot in Lancaster.

You are about 50 yards away, if that! Subway on your doorstep too!

You could probably park down near the canal towards 'Aldcliffe'. Don't think there are parking restrictions down there...

Keep an eye out for my car at the Uni, my lass is there studying law and uses it during the day.

Lancaster has one of the most traffic congested city centres in the NW. Thanks mainly to voting power of the large student populace the Greens now hold the balance of power on the City Council.furious All their policies are vehemently anti-car and they oppose any road building moves to ease the congestion. Their latest hare brained thinking is to try and get a park and ride scheme introduced. Living in the city centre, a car will be more of a liability than an asset. Chances are, if you're not on campus, you'll be socialising in the city centre pubs and clubs so if I were you I'd leave your car at home.

Everything you needs pretty much in town anyway which is a 5min walk away from you. Don't think i'd fancy leaving my mota in town over night in any of the car parks though!!!

Generally i think Lancasters alright. I work away in Norwich but still enjoy coming home for a night out. It's not the best by a long shot but still a good laugh!!!

Hi southpaw,

As others have mentioned Lancaster is a nightmare for traffic, and what's more it can be unpredictable too. I've driven between town and Uni during both morning and evening rush hours in just 5-10 minutes... other times it can take 3 or 4 times that.

£735/year for a 'commuter style' parking permit !?!? eek

There's 'pay & display' on campus that's £3 a day... that would be around £450 for the 3 terms... Councils are just great aren't they ?!?! Only a government body could come up with a parking permit that's almost £300 dearer than pay & display!?!? The only other option to park your car on campus is to get a job on campus (e.g. shop, bar work etc.). Then you pay the £48 per year permit?!?!

It's not worth trying your luck without a permit... they will clamp you and that will be expensive to get off!! mad

Alternatively the buses to the Uni are good during term time, albeit jam packed from around 08:00, and significatly cheaper than the above... + you can have a good time on campus beer and not worry about driving smile

I went to Uni at Lancaster - the parking was different for me, you could get a pass (something like a tenner for the outer, 25 for the inner) regardless of where you lived!

Though that said, the bus service from town was pretty good (and regular) and a season ticket was cheap!

The towns okay -there is a distinct student/non-student segragation, or was when i was there.

All in all, I had a fun 3 years, though I heard they tore down the block i lived in! hehe

Starting last Sept the powers that be decided that you could only park a car on campus if you brought the car into the UK from abroad, worked there, lived off campus outside a designated radius or had special reasons for needing a car. The idea was to ease the parking problems... rolleyes didn't make a difference though. You still have to be in before 9am or risk circling the perimeter road for 20 mins looking for a space...!?!? sonar

Lancaster's not a huge town but it's much more lively during term time. You'll have a good time party

What are you studying by the way Southpaw ???

I'm doing economics smile Which reminds me I still need to choose a college, although I have no idea which one to go for...

Thinking of getting shot of the Puma soon, probably start of 2008 around Febuary. Currently thinking of getting an IS200 Sport, slightly faster, hopefully cheaper and more reliable and a hell of a lot more practical! thumbup

scratchchin Wonder if I can find a way round this, e.g. could I argue a car made abroad was technically brought into the UK from abroad? hehe Does petrolhead-itus count as a reason for needing a car?

Hi again chaps. smile

Lancaster is a pain during rush hour, in fact at almost anytime during a weekday, there also seems to be loads of roadworks all over the place at the moment, just to make life that bit more interesting.

We are trying to get a Lancaster meet together, think we need to spread the word! Plus there are a couple of good pubs about, as has been said though there is a bit of a division between the 'locals' and students, there are also some really pikey pubs. I tend to mooch about in The Borough, The Sun or The John O'Gaunt. The Yorkshire House and Bobbin are really friendly too.
