Great Roads!

Following on from a discussion in the 'spotted' thread, the A640 between Denshaw and Huddersfield has come up as a great driving road in the region.

Do you have a favourite stretch of local black stuff? If so, share it here...

As well as the A640, I also rather enjoy:

The A680 from Rochdale to Edenfield

A loop round Edgeworth just north of Bolton

A loop round the Ribble Valley - Whalley - Clitheroe - over Waddington Fell to Dunsop Bridge and back to Whalley via lunch at the Inn at Whitewell. A great Sunday day out.

A54 from Congleton to Bosley Crossroad then straight on up towards Buxton. You can then either hang a left onto the A537 (Cat & Fiddle) back down towards Macclesfield (usually only worth doing if it's early or late - too much traffic for a spirited run at any other time) or go right towards Buxton then head towards Whaley Brige along the Goyt Valley (A5004, I think), and then back down to Macc. My favourite "standard" outing if I want to kill an hour or so.

There are plenty of little B roads I discover around East Cheshire and the Peaks - but can never remember them next time I'm out for a run. Doh!

Very locally known, Sandy Lane near Chorley, about 2 miles along, can be covered (under the right conditions) in minutes

OK, I asked this on the Advanced Driving forum, but I'll ask here as well: is Buttertubs better than the A686? If so, a trip to the area might be in the offing.

A real "classic". Very scary, very fast nad very technical, all in one road. Awesome.

Comming out of Macc (Hurdsfield end) and through Rainow and over the tops to Whalley Bridge. An awesome twisty stretch with plenty of straights too. The Cerb can 'bottom out' on a couple of bumps but you soon get to know where they are. Then turn left at Whalley up the Chapel en le Firth bypass, through Buxton and back home down the Cat and Fiddle.

James, i'll be travelling along there tomorrow morn on my way to the Shell garage at Whittle-le-Woods to get some rocket juice!

Went to Hereford yesterday morning, and came back the VERY long way through Wales. There has to be no doubt, that some of those roads are amongst the best in the world. Even on a very sunny Saturday afternoon the "main" roads were pretty empty.

The quality of the road-top alone puts the Cheshire and Derbyshire County Councils to shame.

If you like that, try also the road from the Black Dog in Belmont (turn off the A575, in front of the pub itself) to parts back of Rivington/Angelzarke.

Some nasty cambers and drops though, so learn it first!

And look out for moorland fires, I had to stop and phone the brigade yesterday - thought I'd accidentally got into a Pug 406 for moment...

I used to run over that Belmont road when I'd been to Rivvie barn on the bike, superb five minutes of tarmac is that

I'd then take the left at the pub and head back to Chorley, its a good fast road that, handy for clearing the cobwebs out

One of my favourite roads is the back road from Preston to Garstang. Some good cambered turns and a humped back bridge - but that has to be taken properly as you can see by the following hedge line

In my boy racer days, I use to drive as fast as I could along that road, get to the end, turn around, and come back the other way. I'd then turn around in the Black Dog car park and do it again . More often than not, my mate would be right behind me in his Mini, or vice versa, so we could see the flames popping out our the exhausts .

i couldnt aggree more , its great going over belmont in a nice car , especially early morning when its nice and quiet ,

Bl**dy H*ll, can't believe I haven't been over there since I got my TVR - God knows how many times I've died climbing up that road on my push bike!! Have to admit, the view (and the descent) is definitely worth it!!

If the sun's out tomorrow, that's where you'll find me - in the TVR not on me bike - Tea in the Barn anyone???
