North West Airfields or BIG open spaces!
Discussion
As a result of the untimely demise of my last car and the imminent purchase of it's replacement....pretty much everyone who knows me has told me to go find a big wide open space to get used the the cars handling so that I don't carry out a repeat performance! So.... does anyone know of a disused airfield, carpark with no bollards or similar within reasonable travelling distance of south manchester?
Any pointers greatly appreciated

You've several options...
M60, M56, M62 or if you're really daring M6
Alternatively try a trackday, there's a novice one at Oulton 23rd May, contact MSV for details.

Iain
Yeah, I tried those, too busy and great big Armco are a bit of a worry!
Ideally need a large expanse of asphalt or similar so that when it goes wrong, there is nothing to worry about!
I guess I'll take a trundle round the local industrial estates..

mm... Oulton for a first timer? There is not so much space if you get it wrong, how about an airfield like Elvington or something, not exactly local though....
Airfield would be good York a bit of a way to travel really, but then again I can't see there being too many
wide open spaces that haven't had houses built on them near to manchester!
Discovered a route last weekend that taught me a lot about Bluey's handling, even after 5k very rewarding and often exhilerating miles, since bought last year.
A journey up M6, then on A59 through Clitheroe, Waddington to Dunsop Bridge, on through Trough of Bowland to the M6 at Lancaster. A route with enough bends, hills, negative cambers, straights, dips & twists, to make for spirited driving at legal limits; but with enough unpredictable moving hazards like livestock, people, tractors, caravans and cars, to keep you sharp, and to serve as a sensible test for any car & driver AND under real conditions.
Or hire Three Sisters for an hour. It'd cost. But if you think it's necessary then it'd be worth it. Maybe a few of us could investigate...
EDIT: No options for private hire of the circuit on the 3sis site so it looks like it's no go

Three Sisters DO Track Days.
9am - 5pm = £3250 inc Vat inc Marshals & Paramedics.
Lunch 12-1
Half day is half that.
Dunno how comparable that is as I never did one before
£3250/30 = £100 each?? 3 sessions with 10 cars on track... from a non-profit perspective... but isn't it er... a tad narrow for a TVR?
TBH I was more after a big wide space to find the edge of the cars grip and see how it behaves when losing
it so that I have a better idea of what will happen if this situation occurs on the road. This car is so
much different to anything that I have ever driven that I feel the need to be able to really chuck it around
without the risk of hitting any solid objects so that I can adjust my driving style appropriately on the road
where there are solid objects.....and soft alive ones!
Unfortunately the majority of car parks in retail outlets etc...have numerous bollard and kerbs, probably to
discourage exactly this kind of behaviour!

Three Sisters is a bit narrow but Gorners had a TVR session there a while back and everyone seemed to have a good time with no complaints about the track as far as I remember. We dont have that many choices in the NW or am I missing something ??
Aintree, and its brilliant Three Sisters a Kart Track and too narrow IMHO........fun tho!

That's not a bad idea, ta.
Planning on doing a driving course in the local area, so those guys may be able to
give me some pointers.
If you're in the South Manchester area, I'm an observer with the Altrincham IAM group. If you're interested, post here and I'll get details to you.
