Another newbie saying hello, here.

After 25 years of driving boring cars (two beetles, a Daf, two Astras and a Cavalier), I've invested in a nice, new Mk III MR2. I know it's no TVR, but after my previous cars, it's a revelation and I love it.

With summer coming up, I'm looking for advice on some nice roads to drive. I've always loved the A466 from Chepstow to Monmouth (so I'm loking for an excuse to go down to Bath, so I can come back up that way), and I recently discovered the wonderful A686 from Hexham to Penrith coming back from Newcastle. The Cat and Fiddle's OK, but the 50mph limit spoils it IMHO. Something suitable for a Sunday afternoon spin from Altrincham would be ideal.

Hmmm lets think

- East of Manchester - A635 Uppermill to Holmfirth and then the A6024 from Holmfirth down to Tintwhistle is a lovely blast.

- West of Manchester - of course there's the evo triangle if you want to make it a day out, A5 along the bottom, the B543 up the west side toward Denbigh, and the B4501 down the east past Llyn Brenig - awesome

Thanks for the info, dodgyviper - I'll have a look into those. I'm getting a bit bored with Mobberley to Ashley Smithy to the airport tunnel

The road from Betws-y-Coed to Blaenau Ffestiniog is quite nice, except that I got stuck behind an artic on the way back. Took 10 miles to get past him: I was nearly to Llandudno before I managed it.

Just tried out that east-side road (the other way). Lovely day, lovely road. Apart, that is, from the inevitable queue in Mottram, the "ooh, isn't this road dangerous: we'd better do 30 all the way" on the Woodhead, and being caught behind Mr. Brake-Pedal coming down into Greenfield. Seriously, every curve and bend, he was on the brakes right the way through - past the apex - until it was time to use the go pedal again. I wouldn't want to be in his car on a slippy road.
