Hello everyone,

I’m currently searching for scrapyards in the North West of England where I can personally remove parts from Audi and Peugeot vehicles. Specifically, I’m interested in self-service scrapyards.

If anyone has recommendations or knows of any suitable scrapyards in the region, I’d greatly appreciate your input.

I’d have thought H&S issues would have stopped all that nowadays.

Whats wrong with telling them what parts you want to buy ?

Oh for the days when we could wander around the scrappy wearing trousers with loads of pockets!

Whiteheads in Hebden Bridge specialises in PSA stuff IIRC, used to be self service back in the day no idea if it still is though!

Used to love a good rummage around a scrapyard biggrin

Not sure these exist any more. Killed off by H&S regs and eBay I expect.

Shame as they were great fun. Ascending a stack of cars three high with toolbox clutched in one hand was more of an adrenaline rush than a climbing wall;)

Ah the good old days of finding enough jacks littered around the scrapyard to lift the car you want something from onto its side.

Sketchy as hell, but fun.

Or carrying a toolbox with nothing in the bottom two trays - until you left...

Our scrapyard bloke insisted on checking your toolbox both on the way and out.

Self service yards are still alive & kicking. This is my photo of our local yard where they'll even tell you which row / location the cars you are interested in are, with images of the vehicle in stock available online too. (Silverlake nr Southampton)

G&E Car Breakers in Haydock, just outside of Liverpool. They're usually one to just let you meander and scavenge as you please. Take some f*****g good wellies though. It's usually like a quagmire.

Atlas Salvage in St Helens will let you wander around, too. Not a massive selection though.

They definitely do. They are just not the kind of business's you will find by looking on google with shiny websites etc. You'll need to ring up or drop by.

I had a door from a scrappers recently, trudging round in my rigger boots with a bag of sockets, fella helped me go up to the top rack stood on a pallet on a forklift.

So did one I went to when younger. However they did miss the Golf GTi steering wheel my mate had stuffed inside his coat!

No they're rims stood upright in tyres or rims to stop them rolling, although I've never seen anyone mad enough go under, other than the occasional eastern european (by their accents). The best one I saw in there was an old 3 series where they wanted the engine & gearbox out of it, so dropped it off of the back rims holding it up & kept moving the front rims backwards to raise the front of the car above the height of the engine to drag it out! yikes

For some bizarre reason, our (now no longer existing) scrappy hosted an episode of a kids TV show in the 80’s which included Kylie dancing around amongst the spilt oil, wrecked cars etc. Carlisle.

I spent most of my weekends there with my dad, ‘surreptitiously’ nicking car badges while he searched for bits to keep the latest heap running.

He also (the scrappy, Ron Morton) had the most terrifying dogs ever!

If you don’t believe me, Google Kylie Minogue dancing to the London Boys at Ron Morton’s (for some reason I can’t copy the link).

One of my mates had some balls - sauntered up to the owner chatting away, “yeah, see you mate” and off he went. All the time holding the rare alloy wheel under his arm, in plain view.

Do they still let you climb up 3 cars high? Great memories.
