What's the fastest way via public transport to get from Davenham to Manchester City Centre? I've been fiddling with google maps and journey planners but they get a bit confused when you ask to combine taxi and public transport to come up with the fastest route overall. I get the sense that it would be fastest to get a cab to a station that is on a faster / more direct line than the local stations, but weirdly the best combo i can find so far is cab to Altrincham and get the Met. That can't be right can it??

It's probably not far out if at all, touch and go with taxi all the way depending on traffic.

Trainwise it's a slow line into town round there.

I'm originally from Northwich (Rudheath really, half mile from the station), and would conclude the same. Northwich train is just under an hour in as stops everywhere.

Only other train lines are Crewe (too far) and Warrington - only half hour but nearly half hour to get there, so suspect Altrincham is by far the quickest. In fact, all you are really doing is swapping a taxi for the first part of the train, as the Northwich/Mcr train comes in the same way, just far quicker to drive down A556 at NSL than going on a stopping pacer with a stop every few miles.

I would say
Taxi to Winsford rail (5 mins)
Winsford-Crewe (10 mins)
Crewe-Piccadilly (30ish mins).

yea i saw that, kind of odd as you're spending the first half of the journey going in precisely the wrong direction!! i guess then you are restricted by the fast train's timings but worth a look for sure.

yea painfully slow it seems. It's not like i'd be doing it every day mind so a few quid in a cab shouldn't be an issue. It's more the return journey that might be an issue if it was an evening out or something

I do it a few times a year from Mouldsworth - it's particularly frustrating that by Altrincham you think you're nearly there, and then the train goes off sideways to Stockport. It's also annoying that in doing so it goes so close to the airport, but doesn't call in there.

For the journey as far as Altrincham, cab directly to Altrincham woud be much quicker than getting to Northwich station, waiting for a bit (although, not being a frequnt train user, I always admire the people who stroll onto the platform just as the train stops!) then catching the train. Plus you'd have a lot more flexibility as I think the trains are only hourly and I imagine the tram is a lot more frequent.

tram from alty is fairly frequent yes. I guess maybe like every 10 mins or so. It's the way I used to go when I lived in Lymm.

We have moved temporarily to knutsford whilst we try and find somewhere to buy as we are considering lots of different areas chiefly because it's very much a sellers' market right now

potentially. We are looking all over the north west really. I did nearly buy in Davenham 15 years ago but then ended up buying in Lymm and lived there till last year. We kind of want a nice balance of countryside but access to cities... and also want a decent sized house that doesn't cost a fortune, so yea totally unreasonable demands! Given our experiences over the last year at least...

Lymm must be a great location if you need to travel around. But less important if you don't, I suppose. I'm 30+mins west of the M6 and it feels like a wasted hour on a round trip.

that was the reason I chose that location to be honest. Also I was working in Altrincham at the time, and often making car trips to various locations around the country for work. Lymm came top of some survey of the best places to work from home recently but it coincided with us leaving! I do prefer it to knutsford mind (where we are now) as it does seem to have a far higher bellend ratio. Hartford, Davenham, Delamere, Cuddington... sort of around there... i think will more than likely be where we end up, eventually.

I live in Davenham.

If training it, get a cab to Plumley and then (slow) train to Piccadilly. Drive to the station is not much more than to Northwich station and it cuts out 2 stops.

Train used to be more bearable when Mobberley and Ashley were optional stops, but hardly worth bothering now.

Taxi all the way would be my pick, leaving cost out of it.

Lostock Gralam station is a lot closer than Plumley - 2 mins off the A556 bypass.
