We currently live in Warrington by J9 M62 (B&Q)
We plan on moving next year, but undecided to move to Widnes side or the river, or the Runcorn side of the river.

I work in Work in Widnes, and drive company van to work by the big Tesco Distribution Center, M62 and Watkinson Way
My wife works in Manor Park Runcorn, and drives her own car to work, all through Warrington town center, A56 through Walton, and right, down past Daresbury Lab. to manor Park.

We plan on moving next year, but undecided to move to Widnes side or the river, or the Runcorn side of the river.

Plan on buying for around £250k, 3/4 bedroom detached or semi,

Options and ideas anyone.
Runcorn side, or Widnes side ?
One of needs over the bridge every day

Not sure what the question is about the bridge, and which bridge? I have used ‘The Bridge’ (Silver Jubilee Bridge) until it was closed for refurbishment after the tolled Mersey Gateway Bridge opened, is the revised Runcorn Bridge open now,? It is not scheduled until 2020. The Mersey Gateway Bridge is fine, it is a toll bridge by ANPR. I don’t know the areas too well for housing, but, I have to say that a few years back when I took a wrong turn and ended up in Runcorn, I felt the need to lock the doors on my old car (new car is set to self-lock at 5mph).

Runcorn side?

If you are in a works van, doesn't the van owner pay the toll?

If you stay in Halton on the South side, don't you get virtually free transport over the bridge?

Property probably a bit better value in Runcorn, I'd heard the Warrington estates near the motorways were silly expensive.

I've relatives in Warrington that now have to commute over the new bridge and pay charges. After years of claiming "posh" Warrington was a better place to live then "Scumcorn Halton" they now want to be in Halton to get the discount bridge crossings.

Though if living South, forget using Warrington to commute through via Chester Road to North Warrington and the M62 E-W for the next few years, two major bypass junctions between Moore and Lower Walton are due to be built and the Manchester Ship Canal Swing bridges renovated at 6 month one way/direction closures a pop (see Warrington Guardian for local news vitriol spin on these developments)..

Just realised looking at the Halton link, St Helens is in Halton anyway. I always thought Halton = Runcorn so only South of the River. Scratch previous recommendation to go South. Get as near to Clock face in the North whilst still being in Halton to save £1k per year daily fees on the bridge.

Gives a few nice looking places, though avoid Great Skanky and Chapelford villages, at this price point I hear they are skag sink estates these days, Liverpool overspills, despite being nice areas when the New town originally expanded that way. (Go on Warrington Worldwide forum, my Mums always sending me links to that, seems to identify the streets / gangs / corners to avoid).

St. Helen's is not in Halton, I live in Eccleston and got stung for two crossings a couple of months back.

New bridge is good great, I can get into North Wales in under 30mins for early morning drives, must remember to pay though!

Hi,
Thanks for your comments.
My boss won't pay for the toll.
I found out in order to get reduced rates crossing, ie, being a Halton resident, but the vehicle must be registered in Halton also.
As it is a works van, it is registered to some place near Birmingham.
So it looks like I have to pay £2.00 each way in the van, from Runcorn to Widnes, my place of work, and home again.
Or.
Live in Widnes, (or Halton) and my wife gets the reduced bridge toll, as her car would be registered at home.

So the more I think of it, I need to be looking on the Widnes side of Halton

Any more ideas most welcome

Merseyflow, the company that administer the bridge are such staggering inept wksocks they make DVLA look brilliant, just had a representation for a PCN declined as not enough substantiating evidence, only sent them their own receipt and screen grab from bank confirming payment - back to them under appeal FFS

Depends what you are looking for area wise.

Runcorn side there's

Some nice areas at Sandymore or Moore.

Plenty of new build going on.

There's a Redrow development up near the water tower too.

Widnes side there's

Penketh area isn't bad and there are some quite decent homes in parts of Widnes.

Great Sankey also have some nice builds.

Hale Village is supposed to be very nice too.

Are you looking for out of town.

I live in Kingsley, near to Frodsham and the commute either way is a doddle with the new bridge but you won't get the Halton Area discount there.

Some great pointers.

I’m sure I heard that it’s not free for all residents, it actually depends on your council tax band.

Maybe worth looking into

From the Merseyflow website

The costs for crossing the two bridges vary for different types of vehicles, and there are various special discount packages available and several ways to reduce your journey cost.
•Eligible Halton residents can pay a £10 annual admin fee and then make as many personal trips as they like across the river at no extra cost.
•Blue Badge holders can cross both bridges unlimited at no extra charge once they have successfully registered and paid a £5 one-off registration fee.
•Anyone, wherever they live, can save up to 10% on the unregistered toll/charge by registering for a pre-pay sticker account and paying a £5 one-off fee.
•Anyone who drives a car or a small van can cap their costs by buying an 'unlimited travel' or 'off-peak' monthly pass.

You will be able to drive over both bridges without registering, but by doing this you will have to pay the full unregistered toll/charge cost for each journey you make either in advance or by 11.59 pm the day after you cross. If you don’t pay on time you will receive a Penalty Charge Notice.

Surely if the van is registered to your employer won't they have to set up the account ?

Yep, highly annoying that you can't set up a pay-go account that doesn't just need loading with credit.

I've been caught out (through my own stupidity) as a Wirral resident going the other way.
