Morning all,

I'm not sure if this has been asked much before, but I had a quick flick through the last few months' posts and it hasn't been brought up.

Can anyone recommend a good painter in the Northwest who can redo the scruffy bumper on my MX-5?

I'm a fussy so-and-so, and used to do the odd show, but the last time I had paintwork done it wasn't the best, and stonechipped to buggery after 6 months (weird since the OEM paint lasted for 18 years before that!).

Ideally I'm looking for somewhere close to Stockport/Cheshire/Manchester, but willing to travel for good work.

I know a guy near Nantwich who's just opened up on his own after some time at a local luxury car manufacturer. I had some work done by him many years ago and it was very good, but I can't honestly say I've seen his more recent work. Seems to be quite busy. Is that in your catchment area, or a bit far south?

I had mine painted recently by M+W Autobodies in Wigan. Perfect finish. Pics are in my readers cars thread.

Hmm, it's a bit out of the way, but I'd be willing to travel if they're decent! Any more details?

I'll have a look at the pics, from the reviews on Google they seem like more of a general accident repairer, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but doesn't always mean a quality job (told you I was fussy!)

Equally paying loads and going to a well regarded specialist who also paints high end stuff, doesn't guarantee a perfect finish either!

Unfortunately I have painful and expensive experience of this.

Fair play, I should probably broaden my horizons!

i've used 5 different bodyshops in the last 5 years on 3 different cars, all different price points, from the middling to the high end, but all well reviewed and regarded. None of them have been perfect, just varying levels of OK/acceptable.

Honestly it's a total crap shoot....obviously the smaller the item/area that's being painted, the lower the chance of issues.

Would i ever have a full respray again? Never!!!! The stress of the last paint shop experience ultimately led to me selling the car, a good job was done in the end, but it was such a stressful process that it totally killed my love of what was a very very good car.

That's the problem I'm having, the last work I had done was from someone who was well-reviewed, and in hindsight the work was poor, requiring a return visit a week later, before the stonechips really mounted up just months later.

So the question is, do I research, try to find somewhere good and risk disappointment, or just stick a pin in a map and see how it goes?

I would try and find somewhere in the middle of the road price wise, and check their feedback... but yeah you aren't far off!!

their approach and willingness to rectifying any issues is almost more important than the paintwork itself.

I know a good guy in sheffield if that's any help? he blew over my mk2 mx5 when i had it, and it was a very decent job.

The Sheffield spot-

Contact Dave at Deepcar autobodies.

Well regarded in the mx5 scene and knows them inside out bodywork wise, really nice guy too. So you don't have to worry about them screwing up the strip down or rebuild as they haev done loads of mx5s.

Only potential downside is that his business has grown a fair bit so you might be on a bit of a waiting list, but he's definately worth calling. He really helped me out a couple of times in my mx5 days.

Maybe. But I know him and told him what I wanted. That was a perfect finish, not bothered about cost and did not want a quick turnaround. I left the car with him when I went on holiday, collected when I came back.

As others have stated, cost is irrelevant. Plenty of expensive, st painters out there.

Ahh, I've heard of Deepcar, pretty sure he's got (or had) a Pitcrew bodykitted Mk1 Mx5. I'll add them to the list!

You could try Ste at Autoline in Wigan. He's an MX5 fan, has his own and is active on MX5Nutz. He did the arches and sills on my Mk1. I was happy with the work. The garage is walking distance from Wigan train station, which made life a little easier as I was coming from South Manchester.

I've also had some work done by Carl at CBS Autos in Nelson, another MX5 specialist. - resprayed front bumper and bonnet on a Mk2. I believe he contracts out the bodyshop work, but again I was happy with the results.
