New location ideas

Hi All,
After a bit of advice as my local knowledge isn't so good...
I currently live in Manchester city centre and have a 2 mile (15 min) drive into work.
My Girlfriend is in Spain currently, and when she returns to the UK in late August we're planning to move in together we're just not sure where.
I'll still be working in Hulme, Manchester and Girlfriend studying in at Leeds Becket university.
We need a place to live somewhere between Manchester and Leeds with a decent bias towards Manchester as we know that's where I'll be pretty much 9-5, M-F. (Wheras my girlfriend won't need to be in Leeds as much or for as long)
We need to rent, with a budget between £4-700 PCM and want reasonable area. Quite keen on rural locations / countryside. Good VFM a must with girlfriend being a student.
Suggestions appreciated.

Try researching Saddleworth - lots of villages, Uppermill is most touristy with eateries and pubs a plenty.
Train / bus routes to Manchester and Leeds, metro link in Oldham.
Well placed to drive to either??
Worth a day trip - treat yourself to a pie or cake from Buckleys bakery or plenty of cafe / wine bars for a hot beverage or something stronger.

There's probably very little benefit to be had from me concluding this, but I thought I may as well follow up...
We moved to Ramsbottom and we just love the area, loads of lovely independant shops, restaurants, lovely scenery and everyone is just a bit more friendly round here. It's a lovely place to be.
Commute for me into near enough central Manchester isn't so bad. usualy takes up to but not longer than 45 minutes (I do use the Waze nagivation app which I'm sure saves me a lot of time.)
Girlfriends commute yet to be tested, hopefully it won't be tood bad!

Cool. Welcome aboard. My father rented there a few years ago and enjoyed it. He lives in Rawtenstall now, where again he enjoys it.
