VIP dinner / drinks in Manchester - venue?
Discussion
Dear all,
I am putting on a sporting event in Manchester in September that will involve roughly 60 VIPs attending from various corners of the globe. A mix of politicians and business men.
After the event, there will be a dinner and drinks reception. I need to find a venue in Manchester that is definitely "British" and interesting.
Last year the event was in London and we had the dinner at Inner Temple and it was deemed a great success. We were majoring on history / pomp which London has in spades. I am aware of the artistic and cultural heritage of Manchester and that is one of the angles I have been pushing when asked, "why Manchester?" I suppose it would be nice for the venue to reflect these characteristics. Or perhaps something from the more industrial past. As you can see, I am short on ideas...
I don't know Manchester at all - can anyone suggest some decent venues? Private room in a hotel etc is definitely out.
Many thanks

Manchester Town Hall or the newly refurbished Central Library perhaps?

Thanks for the input. Off to a good start!
I love the Concorde idea, although fear we may be a bit swamped in all that space. They are staying at the Midland so right opposite the library - will be sure to check that out. MOSI looks good too.
I should probably try and get them to the Etihad at some point - will be in touch about that.

Imperial War Museum is a poor venue IMO. The one I am considering for something similar is the Cathedral http://events.manchestercathedral.org/ which looks interesting. Have also attended one based here http://www.themonastery.co.uk/ which was a decent setup and well run.
Hope you find something that fits the brief.

How about the Velodrome? Or if it's culture, how about the John Rylands library? This is both a pretty impressive building, and one which houses a very significant collection, but I don't know if they do private events...
I know a member here has a vested interest, but in my opinion the Etihad is a little "clinical", it's very good in terms of a venue and the staff really are superb but it just lacks a bit of character. However, the football museum is equaly new, and yet I find it to be a fun venue although it can be a little cold (as in temperature). Perhaps the Manchester Museum might be able to help?
Victoria Baths is a glorious building. (There's no water in them now!)
I've been to a few good events there.
About 10 mins drive from The Midland Hotel.
Three slightly different pool rooms and lots of different quirky areas for drinks etc.
