Hi,

I'll be moving to Crewe with work soon and could do with some advice on where to live.

Essentially:
I want somewhere that's not a long commute - absolute max of 30 minutes each way!
I'm looking for a 1 bed flat / small house, but at as reasonable a cost as possible
A place with reasonably close amenities such as a gym, supermarkets etc
Driving distance to the countryside, I'm a keen road cyclist and enjoy rides around quiet B roads

Anyone any ideas?

Cheers,

Andy RV

Not in Crewe!

Are you familiar with the area what so ever?

Here's a few places for a look;

Nantwich
Haslington
Wistaston
Willaston
Wybunbury
Shavington

Cheers. I'd heard Crewe was a bit of a dive, plus I wouldn't want to live on the doorstep of where I work.

I'm not familiar with the area really. I'm originally from Bolton so know some of the no-go areas which are local, i.e Winsford etc.

I'd narrowed it to:
Sandbach
Nantwich
Middlewich
Congleton (maybe?)

Any thoughts on those? None of them seem extortionate in terms of rent either, all look nice enough, and have a large village-like feel but aren't cut off. And importantly all are 15 mins or so from Crewe.

Sandbatch or Nantwich would be my choices, Nantwich is a bit bigger, but Sandbach being sat on the M6 is a bit better for nipping to Manchester / Birmingham. I live in Alsager, which is smaller than Sandbach but maybe a touch cheaper, not much in the way of crime or trouble.

My record from my house to Domino's in Crewe is 12.5 minutes biggrin

Plenty of good cycling around south cheshire, clubs to join etc.

Don't really know much about Congelton but the others are all ok places.

The only thing I'd warn you of is in Middlewich there are a few caravan sites they also own some houses to. They are right wkers. 99% of it is ok though just don't get anywhere near the Canal.

Nothing wrong with Winsford IMO, its leagues ahead of Middlewich for damn sure. If you looked at the top end of Winsford (Over) you have a few options for Crewe too. I've been here 18months now, the place has its fair share of old council estates and types but its really not an issue as its big enough to cope. Better traffic/access than Middlewich, unless you want to live next to the M6.

Congleton has surrounding countryside but its a dull town IMO, Nantwich would be my first choice if access to Crewe was the main aim.

Stone (ST15) is a nice little town, easily commutable to Crewe. Few nice pubs/bars/restaurants.

Of everywhere mentioned my choice would be Nantwich, plenty of pubs and places to eat, nice buildings with some history, countryside is on your door step with a some cycling spots.

Where about's in Crewe will you be working? If you have to travel across the town at peak times you can easily add 15 - 20 minutes onto your normal travelling time.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

Nantwich is looking favourite at the moment I think. Reasonable rent there too.

I'll be working just around the corner from Crewe's train station.

I'd also say Nantwich, my usual drinking venue. I worked in Middlewich for quite a number of years, in a building on the canalside funnily enough. Although it seemed OK generally, we had quite a few incidences of people vandalising the fence, and I wouldn't have fancied leaving a car on the car park overnight. Seemed to take a long time to get to Middlewich considering how close it was.

Nantwich can get quite busy traffic-wise (busy for rural area, not city-style busy) but you soon get used to where and when to avoid, like anywhere else. There's a few areas that I'd think of as 'dodgy', but again not as dodgy as some places. Lots of pubs in and around Nantwich, very close to countryside.

Cheers.

What are the dodgy areas? And are there dodgy bits of Nantwich then?

Not dodgy in the scheme of things, but like anywhere there's the flash parts and the less flash parts. And in fairness I should have phrased that as areas that I think are dodgy, rather than areas that actually are. As I think about it, it's hard to pin that down to somewhere specific. Just noticed last night another big block of apartments going up.

Think everywhere has been covered that I would suggest, Nantwich would be high up on my list, Alsager is nice and close by, as is Audley and you could always looks a little further to Newcastle all within 30 mins.

Nantwich is the pick of that bunch, though Sandbach has improved a lot in the last few years.

I've no ambition whatsoever to live in Middlewich or Winsford.

Congleton is alright, and gives better access to the better moorland driving roads of Staffordshire and Derbyshire. Driving in South Cheshire is generally not great - too many tall hedgerows obscuring vision. North Staffs and Derbyshire are much, much better.

But the pubs, parks, town centre and general civic activity of Nantwich is the best to be found around Crewe.

There's always something going on in Nantwich, it's a really disproportionately busy, bustling little town.

Though if you're from Bolton, you'll find everywhere around Crewe less friendly. People generally don't say hi as you pass in the street unless you're living somewhere very small.

Winsford must be the sthole of Cheshire. Stopped at a bar there once on the way back from Oulton Park. It seemed to be full of only two types of people, those who knew they were chavs and those that didn't yet know. Then a fight broke out, the only entertainment being watching the slighty chunky and very gobby barmaid pushing people out the door.
Actually might stop off again next time we go to Oulton, seems more fun now I write about it

I've lived here 18months and yet to see one fight, you must have picked a proper dodgy pub smile We have a couple of decent places now, wine bar/real ales at Over roundabout, the Red Lion is decent, and you can all laugh but Wetherspoons does at least have a decent ale selection if you're not fussy about the clientele..

Nah it's a sthole!!

Lived on the outskirts past the Police HQ, got burgled, nearly got beat up in Asda car park because some chav couldn't be bothered looking left when crossing the road while texting. Glad to be out of there TBH.

Tarporley. Sure there will be a one bed somewhere on the high street. Has all the amenities mentioned within walking distance, but maintains a sense of village authenticity. Worlds apart from Winsford. Oulton Park conveniently nearby too.
