I'm about to accept a job offer in Bury which will mean re-locating for me. (Currently in Chesterfield)
I'll be looking to house-share with other people around my age (23)

The job is Waterfold Park, Bury so I'll be looking to move somewhere where it'll take me under half an hour to drive in.
Can anyone recommend some decent areas I should be looking at?

I'd be looking up the valley to Edenfield, Helmshore, some areas of Rawtenstall.I'd also avoid Ramsbottom as there are too many people trying to get in and out of the place in the morning and evenings.

Bury Bridge is a problem in the rush hour (where the A58 crosses the River Irwell just west of the town centre) and I'd base your living arrangements around that...

Having said this, I was born and bred in Tottington (I am now exiled in Bolton rolleyeshehe ) and there is a rat run from Walshaw & Tottington from the bottom of Wood Street (via Wellington Street?) onto Bolton Road (google maps it) but watch for the bus lane wink .

I also lived in Redvales (a mile south of the town centre - Radcliffe Road/Manchester Road area) for a few years several years ago, and you'd be largely travelling against the traffic in both commutes - but the area has gone down the pan more recently I believe. The postcode here is BL9, and in Tottington is BL8 - both are pretty nightmarish for car insurance frown . Don't go east of Market Street, that area is gruesome (he said knowingly - again, maps.google.co.uk it to see where I am on about it).

Points east or north (as per earlier posts, points north have motorway access to your workplace) might be better, much as it pains me to say this wink .

Radcliffe road is cursed at the moment. A mate died in a car accident a couple of weeks ago and another I didn't know directly this week. frown

This.

Rossendale generally is pretty rural, and the commute down The Edenfield bypass/ M66 will take you 20 mins to your workplace.

It's not a recent issue frown - and having lived adjacent for several years I just don't get why? frown

It's a couple of miles of straight-ish road (no hairpins or anything), but accidents occured seemingly weekly (this often!) when I was there... I lived in one of the millhouses belonging to the mill that became MacPhersons, and the junction with the main road is now one way away from the main road only - not a surprise, this one, as turning right out of there was always gruesome.

Radcliffe Road on the Bury side of the bridge was always 'dangerous' (understatement) but many - a few fatally frown - came a cropper between Warth Road and Manchester Road also - a straight stretch confused .

Odd for a straight bit of road.

Thanks for the contributions so far.
I've seen a nice looking place just off Blackley new road in Blackley and I'm looking to arrange a viewing.
The house looks nice in isolation and the comute at 7 miles each way should be OK.

I would be keen to hear thoughts on the area though?

I have friends that work in Bury that live in Manchester City Centre or in areas like Chorlton. Easy commute especially with the tram.

I live in ramsbottom, but I'm old so not too bothered about getting into Manchester on the p1ss. If I were you I'd look for somewhere Manchester side of Bury where there's a bit more life!

As mentioned, Whitefield would be handy.

A colleague of mine did the same - lived in Manchester city centre and worked at Waterfold BP for 5 years.

Excellent lurking thumbup (1 post in 12 months wink ). The Bury junction is right by the OP's workplace, which is what you're saying I guess... smile

Re: other posts about Blackley, I'd be looking at points East (Heywood etc) or North (Ramsbottom, Rossendale - as per Ibrahims786's comment), even North West (Tottington/Walshaw/Holcombe Brook) where there is a rat run to the main road across the Irwell - one could even go berserk and get a place in Edgeworth or somewhere round there (but the public transport isn't much good in the evenings/early in the mornings to get to Bury).

Blackley will be a run against the traffic in both rush hours, so that's an easy commute, but it's not the most salubrious of areas for the other side of your work-life *cough* balance frown (it depends if you like the wail of sirens and the regular crack of gun shots through the day - we only get the former in Egerton and Bromley Cross, which are also convenient for Bury with a 30 minute drive across the hills [don't try to get through Harwood in the morning rush hour!] and then using the aforementioned rat run just to the west of Bury smile ).

At your age I'd definitely recommend somewhere around Whitefield or maybe even Radcliffe or Prestwich, but make sure you are within striking distance of the Metrolink or a train station into town.. Manchester is a great night out and the last tram home is about 1am. Bury isn't the greatest night out, pretty much like all northern towns.

I lived in Whitefield for a while and have friends in Radcliffe. Blackley is a bit of a dump, as is Middleton where I used to own a house for 5 years. It was a good base for my nights out in Manchester though!

The thing is, around Manchester, just a mile move down the road and the quality of area can change dramatically!

One thing worth noting is that the M60 anti-clockwise from junction 24 in the morning is pretty clear, and as the M60 runs directly onto the M66 at j18 up to Bury, you won't have to sit in the nasty bit after the m60 rejoins itself!

I've lived and worked around north and east Manchester pretty much most of my life, and I've moved around a bit so have a good feel for the area. Obviously budget is a consideration, but north of Bury would be a definate no no for me at your age unless you are the outdoors type and don't want easy access to one of the most varied and fun nights out in the country!
