Police Pursuit M6 Southbound near Lancaster /Preston?

We were heading Southbound yesterday (Wed) around 1400 hrs when a BMW Police Estate shot past at high speed.
The traffic then slowed to a steadier pace when suddenly a Silver Focus shot past doing 90+ followed by two more BiB Beemers.
He dodged from Lane 3 across 1 & 2 at high speed before taking to the Hard Shoulder hotly pursued by BiB and disappeared into the distance still tanking it.
Just wondered if it was for real or a practise - if the later fr*cking dangerous given the volume of traffic and high speed lane changes!

I've seen this before out side St Helens, You can normally tell its plod driving the 'baddie' car as they're in uniform. The day I saw it I would also say it was quite dangerous considering the speed and amount of traffic.

Also seen it myself in Cumbria - think the police like the quiet motorway stretches up there.

When i worked there a lot, 2002-2004 ish, the Octavia VRS was the weapon of choice - but some did say 'POLICE' on the back - plain white cars with red text.
