Don't get me wrong, i love cars but i'm all for doing what i can to save the planet!

Anyway, weekend - we're away with the outlaws in Blackpool for a couple of nights, but the wife has to get back to the Wigan area on Sunday morning with one of the kids, for a party.

Just been on National Rail website and the only train that will get her there for 9am is as follows:

Leaves Blackpool at 3.20am, BUS SERVICE, to Mcr Airport, arrives 5.25am.

5.30am bus leaves Mcr Airport, arrives Preston at 6.55am.

Again, bus leaves Preston at 8.03am, and arrives Wigan NW at 9am.

Needless to say, i'm not surprised people just take the car!

Thats why nobody uses National rail. The website, system and interface are completely retarded. I guess it all depends on day and which particular station, but i just did a quick search on thetrainline.com and got these results.

It's a Sunday. Demand for trains on a Sunday morning early on isn't very high so they aren't ran.
There'll be engineering works between Preston and Wigan hence the bus replacement.

If you do need to get to Wigan then there's the 08:20 at Blackpool to Preston then a bus replacement from Preston getting you to Wigan for 10:00.

Which makes sense.

Unlike going past Wigan twice - to get about 20 miles in the wrong direction each time!

Nothing between Preston and Crewe for a lot of the weekend unfortunately. A lot of Virgin's Preston - Brum services are going via Bolton and Manchester instead.

I'm having to drive to Crewe to pick my brother up and bring him back to Lancaster as it'll be much quicker than him having to go via Manchester.

Don't blame Virgin, TPE or Northern Trains,Network Rail schedual the work several months in advance, christmas is terrible this year, but the reasoning is minimal disruption to commuters. The work has to be done at somepoint I realy can't think of an alternative unfortunately so the long distance occasional travellers suffer!
