Hello chaps, hope you don't mind me visiting from the Yorkshire forum...

I'm just after a bit of advice on traffic conditions tonight. I'm at a funeral in Bramhall (south of Stockport) this afternoon but have got to drive my 30 year old Porsche from there too Worcestershire to attend a rally I'm competing in. Time is tight - I can't leave Bramhall until about 4.15pm, need to be in Evesham by 7.30pm. Satnav indicates it is only 110 miles but it will be down the M6.

My proposed route is Bramhall, Wilmslow, Alderley Edge, passing Joddrel Bank, M6.

Will this be total carnage late afternoon on a Friday? I'm driving the car I'm competing in so could really do without boiling the engine in heavy traffic if there is a better route.

Any help much appreciated.

I'd take a stab at yes, motorways around Stockport will be bad, likewise going across country will be busy also, I doubt there's any advantage though in trying another alternative route if I'm honest, the only part I could add is rather than jump on the M6 at Holmes Chapel maybe jump on the A50 and head down to sandbach and get on there, but it's always busy around jct16 and 15

Cheers - looks like I'll just have to suck it and see later today.

I'm from Bramhall originally and fondly remember doing some test runs in my Mk2 Golf GTI down the road from Alderley to the M6. In fact I set my overtaking record there in about 1995 (17 cars in one go) that I only beat last year on a road called '9 Mile Burn' going into Edinburgh.

Anyway, will be good to be back for a little while.

That sounds like the best route. The M56 between the M60 and the M6 is best avoided at that time. Taking the A50 south from Holmes Chapel to Sandbachas mentioned might help a bit. The M6 can be a nightmare though anyway and I suspect it'll be tight making your deadline.

Where are the flying cars we were promised on Tomorrow's World back in '85?

Thought a bit more about this, you could head down the A50 to Alsager turn right into Alsager and then turn left at the first major lights, this will take you down past the train station and a country lane which eventually crosses the A500, if you turn right onto the A500 you'll hit the M6 at Jct16 (about 3 miles) or if you turn left onto the A500 you'll eventually hit jct15 (10 miles tops) which is where I usually see the heaviest traffic
