Who remembers William Arnold at Hazel Grove in the seventies

Can anyone remember the VW-Audi dealership on the A6 in Hazel Grove back in the 1970's? Latterly it took on Renault too. I worked there in the mid 70's, around 1974-76 as a an apprentice first and then as a mechanic for a while before leaving to go to Manchester Garages. Names I remember were Alec Duncan, Ernie Bennison, Les Goodwin, Dave Calvert, Eric Lund. Where are you know? It ended up closing down and became a shoe shop I think? It was next to a Robinson's pub, I think that was called the Grove? or was it the Grapes?

I have lived in Hazel Grove since 1975, & I remember the dealership, although I had no dealings with them. The pub next door was indeed The Grove, sadly closed down last year. I used to frequent The Cock Inn across the road next to the old Co-op, which is now Asda.
The showroom stood empty for a while, then became a large discount shoe retail outlet called Wynsors.
There have been a lot more changes to the area, you probably wouldn't recognise it now.
I don't know any of the names you mentioned, but there are a couple of VW specialist garages on side streets off the A6, so perhaps they are involved with them.
There used to be a guy called Moggie Mills? or Mairs? who did awesome custom paint jobs, fantastic airbrush work, but sadly he's gone now, dunno where.
Nostalgia ain't wot it used to be.

I'm sure I remember Moggie Mills? He used do a lot of bike paintwork and custom cars I think? I do come down occasionally to visit Mum and have noticed how things changed over the years. Shame the Grove closed down, it hurts me deep inside when I hear of a pub closes, sacrelidge!
I moved to the Grove aged 6 weeks in Oct '74, left to go to college & haven't lived in the Grove since but parents & brother still do & I'm back regularly. Never knew that building had been a car dealership, do remember it as a Kwik Save before they move round the corner after the mill on Commercial Road was knocked down. Sad to see pubs close, but the Grove wasn't much of loss.

The Grove was a cracking little pub back in the seventies, traditional place, typical of a Robbies house of the day and as some thankfully still are today, untouched by the 'gin palace' or 'ye old plastic' pub designers. It was run by a rather rotund chap in his 50's with a huge moustache and lamb chop sideboards if I recall? The stereotypical jolly landlord. PS. Love your PH name!!
This thread seems to be doing a body swerve off the OP but as it's airing towards my favourite brewer carry on chaps! I live in Scotland now and have done since 1981, on my far too infrequent trips to see Mum in Cheadle Hulme I do spend a good proportion of my time visiting Robbies pubs, at the end of everye drive down I detour down the M56 and exit at the airport instead of using the M60 on to the A34 just to have a pint in the Tatton Arms. Other favourites are the Swan with Two Necks in Stockport, The Church Inn Cheadle Hulme (a brisk doggie walk from Mum's house), and the Cat and Fiddle at Wildboarclough.
I worked there 69-71 originally as SA with Terry Griffin, Arthur Johnson,, Willie Harrison, Derek Faulkner.,as well as guys mentioned. I became Service Manager for a while and married my secretary Lorraine!. We has some good laughs at The Grove pub and yes he did have a large moustache and so did one of the petrol guys behind Grove., Eventally ended up working for Knighty at SKF. Speak again. Hope that you're well how's Lorraine she was a really nice person i once went to her dads house in Poynton to do a job for him..
