Just a heads-up!

Haigh Hall, from 11am.

All in aid of Wig and Leigh Hospice. Looked some good kit there last year.

My experience of attending this event.Heard about it too late to book so just went anyway.
Drove up to the gate,
'no mate cant come in unless you have booked',
ME(smiling acting as freindly as poss').'I know, sorry but I heard about it too late to book, but seeing as I have a German classic car surely there is plenty of room for latecomers?'
'no mate, cant come in unless you have booked'.
ME,right fine.Drives off to find somewhere to park.I thought sack this I will have another go,so I walked back to the gate, spoke to somebody else who seemed a lot more freindly,I said if it is tight for room fair enough but I think my car justifies a late spot.(ALL VERY FREINDLY AND SMILING).
Bloke #2 says why what car have you got? I told him it was a 1986 BMW M535i.He says without a moments hesitation,no problem at all bring it through.
Anyway there was tons of room to park up,and at an event like this the more the merrier in my book.
Now then...I have been car mad for ever and perhaps I have been to too many shows in the past that it has made me a car snob but this was a German classic car event. Now I dont class Audi TT's as classics or 1 series BMW's or E36's.To me they are just cars.
If it was for a good cause fair enough but not worth making special plans for.

Excellent thread resurrection. A lot of car shows are pre book only because of liability insurance these days. I'm glad you got in though. Maybe 'classic' is the wrong name for the show - just 'German' might suffice. I like to see a good e36 - you come across as a little snobbish. Also a lot of the tt owners are fanatical about their cars which should be applauded. Last thing - my club won best display this year!

Took my car to the show and thought it was a pretty good event. I wasn't aware it was supposed to be a classic event, just thought it was a German car show. I agree with the above about the insurance being the problem with the late access, but once again, well done on getting in.

Although the show is titled "German Classic Car Show" it may be time for a re-title of just "German Car Show". Interestingly enough, if one clicks on the link at the top of this thread the promotional cars featured are a brace of 911s probably dating from the early/mid 1980s - are they classics? I don't know, but they're German and interesting. One of our members bought along his brand new type 991 Porsche 911, a car which certainly hasn't stood the test of time and cannot at this stage be considered a classic. However, I'd wager that there were plenty of people at Haigh Hall who found it interesting to take a look at purely because there aren't many of them about and not everyone is in the habit of popping into their local Porsche dealership for a look around. For those reasons, I think the car had every right to be at the show.

Of course the other point worth considering is whether any old car is a classic, or whether a classic has to have some specific merit. It was suggested that an old E36 was not worthy of showing. Is a Plain Jane E36 318 less significant than an M535? Sometimes it's the cooking models from the range that disappear first and it almost makes them more interesting at shows because they're the odd ones out from the usually more cherished high performance cars that have been saved from the scrap heap.

Returning to the TT question - as I said above, many TT owners are fanatical about their vehicles and I think it's fair to let them show them. They are not necessarily classics, but can be interesting to look at if they are modified, tuned, exceptional condition etc and often the owners are more than happy just to 'talk cars' to a stranger at a show. Fair play to them. I sincerely hope they run the Haigh Hall show again next year, and if they do I'll endeavour to be there with my 911. It's not particularly old, nor is it a particularly interesting spec, but if it looks good in a club line-up and makes someone smile that's good enough to me. 'Course, if I could find an old M5 to show, I'd be the envy of everyone... ; )

So we just got home from this .... all in all a good show but a couple of observations ....

Nowhere is this advertised as taking place.... no signs on the roads outside the main entrance.... No signs in the main car park no signs in the hall grounds ... you catch my drift? what a wasted opportunity. Because the show is held in the lower field lots of casual visitors to the hall wouldn't even be aware the show was taking place !!!

Also its my second year and already the show is suffering from the same time same place syndrome you get at lots of car shows .... you know the same cars displayed on the same pitch year after year etc. the green 911 with the KEV registration plate pictured above was in exactly the same spot last year .... same with lots of other cars on display.

Also the music played over sound system was atrocious (imo)...

Lets see some changes next year please organizers .

Two things: I thought the music was quite acceptable. How about next year you find a car more worthy than the Kev 997 gt3rs and I'll ask Kev not to bring his car and you can display your offering. Fair?
