Is there some kind of big or important trial going on in Manchester at the moment?

for the last 2 days there has been a convoy of 5 or 6 police cars accompanied by a prison transport wagon, going from Deansgate along towards Piccadilly at around 0830, back again at 1630. is that just usual criminals in transport, or is something big happening?

Sounds like it. That route would take them to Minshull Street Crown Court.

If any of these names ring a bell, perhaps it's them:

ETA - do you see where they turn off Deansgate? If they head towards Piccadilly station itself it'll be Minshull Street, but if they turn off left towards Salford, it'll be City of Manchester Crown Court.

I woud say that is the least amount of security I would take if I had to be in Manchester.

They went toward Picadilly - along Whitworth Street West, past the Hacienda apartments.

Not sure why you put the rolleyes in. They weren't being subtle or in stealth mode, that's for sure. They also didn't stop for red lights, even when it meant driving at pedestrians crossing on a green man.

Minshull Street then. Best thing would be to tally the appearances of the convoy with recurrent appearances of the same names in the courts circular.

Used to see it quite regular when I worked in Manc. Guess its SOP if there's any chance of an attempt to break out the prisoners.
