Windermere for a day
Discussion
I would strongly suggest the kirkstone pass(a592) upto the a5091, along the a66 west toward Keswick and then down the b5322 and then onto the a591 down to Ambleside. I would strongly suggest stopping in at Grasmere for some traditional gingerbread when you are going down the a591.
I have done the above quite a few times in different cars I have owned and the views and roads are brilliant on a clear day, just beware of other drivers as they seem to drive at 30mph in NSL zones and some sections are impossible to overtake people on.

Honister Slate mine is a great location too. nice roads and a fantastic view around those parts.
8hrs is a good amount of time and you should be able to do all the main passes and most of the popular towns en-route.
Kirkstone Inn is a nice stop. very friendly.
If you have time head down into Great Langdale. Though this is a dead end you have to come back out the same route, but the views from the bottom of the mountains is very nice.
Approx a 20 - 40 min detour depending on traffic and walkers.

If you carry on along the Kirkstone pass, and head to Patterdale and Glenridding, you could take the boy on the Ullswater Steamers and have a good look at Ullswater close up.
Also, in Windermere, hire a boat and go for a row on the lake to the little islands, or if in Bowness, perhaps take him to the Beatrix Potter museum. I've never been (not with my kids anyway, recall going as a kid) but i hear it's quite a good way to spend an hour if you've got young uns.
There's also crazy golf etc there (Windermere).
Maybe head to the bottom of Lake Windermere and there's an aquarium (Aquarium of the Lakes) i think it's called and also the Lakeland Motor Museum nearby.
Speaking of which - the new motor museum - has this replaced the other one that was near Cartmel? (Holker?)

I'll have to spend some time googling those to see the logistics, but thanks for that Also, in Windermere, hire a boat and go for a row on the lake to the little islands, or if in Bowness, perhaps take him to the Beatrix Potter museum.
