Just been told we're having a re-shuffle at work and my usual 13 mile commute to Warrington was going to become a 21 mile commute to Salford.

To be then kept behind, a few of us, telling us that we've been chose to become part of a new team based 38 miles away in Chester.

Impressed? Hmmm.

Anyway, coming from the St Helens area, any idea how long i'd be looking at getting to City Road, Chester?

Google maps is saying 47 minutes but doesn't assume for trafffic at rush hour. Is it that bad?

A guy at work goes regularly and says M56 and M53 aren't that bad - which is probably the route i'll end up going.

Also, any reasonably priced car parks etc???

Whereabouts in St Helens are you?

I assume you'll be down the dual carriageway skirt Widnes on to the Runcorn bridge to pick up the M56?

North side - but just far enough away from Wigan.

Near the East Lancs Rd.

Through Widnes, 56 then 53.
I've took my fiancee two or three times into Chester at peak times and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. No queuing whatsoever. This was around 08:20-08:45.
I could have been lucky tho.

I'm near J23 (Haydock Island) of the M6.

Two possible routes for you which I've used:

1. M6 down to the M56 and then onto the M53.
2. M6 down to the M62, off at J7 (Rainhill Stoops), then down the A557 to go over the Runcorn Bridge to pick up the M56 and then onto the M53.

I personally perfer first route, if the motorways are clear and moving.

As you can expect though both routes have potential for disaster, the Thelwall viaduct and the Runcorn bridge. If either of these bottlenecks suffers an accident or closed to strong winds expect delays.

If you're doing M56/M6 you can pop in for a brew at ours . . stones throw from J10 of the 56 smile

One of my team lives in Wigan and instead of Liverpool has been spending more time going to Chester. He has not found it easy, and is chucking the TT for a diesel. And when it goes wrong, it goes wrong in a BIG way. Check the roads before you leave home, could save you hours!!

Where is the office in Chester? Rush hour exit from the city centre can be difficult as well.

I used to do J22 of the M6 to Chester Business Park and back every day. 95% of the time it was ok, and used to take me an hour there and 40 minutes back. In my 147 GTA cloud9

But, any accidents and you will be delayed. Usually quite signigicantly.

From St Helens you're probably best going over the Runcorn bridge as has been suggested, rather than A580/M6/M56.

Not a million miles for me.

Work are fairly flexible and my boss is normally out and about - plus we're co-locating so only a few of us rather than lots of folks complaining that they get in on time and others are late, so not overly worried. Thanks.

I've got a diesel at the moment, and have another one on order. So that's not an issue.

Office is a natts chuff away from the railway station, apparently. (which says to me 'middle of city!). I've looked at train times etc and it's 1 hr 30 mins each way, plus the drive to the station, and approx £12 return too - so a no no at present.

Ok, thanks. Will consider this one.

What is the dual carriageway through Widnes, past the big Morrisons like, during rush hour? Obviously busy but im assuming by the suggestions that it's not prohibitively so?

Bit gutted really. I've worked for 3 companies. First was in Preston, 24 miles away, 30 mins, almost to the minute, each way. 2nd was in Birchwood, Warrington - 14 miles away, 25 miles. Current is other end of Birchwood, 13 miles away, 20 mins on a good day, usually 35 going home. But 13 miles is close and if the wife ever rings with a sick child to get to or 'you've got the car seat that i need' it's not a massive trek back!

Chester is going to be though.

May consider car sharing if anyone knows anyone or of any websites where i can find someone?

Similarly, if anyone lives in Chester, may be looking for a 'driveway' to park on whilst you're out - and work might be paying.

The problem is probably going to be the Runcorn Bridge.

Some days you're lucky and sail across but other days can be an absolute nightmare.

Which ever route you choose, there can be delays at Bridge Foot Warrington or the Thelwall Viaduct.

It's a gamble either way.

Riiiiight. Didn't consider that - just looked at St Helens Central. And N-Le-W is probably on a different line. N-le-W is 4 miles or so away for me and i start work fairly early, well usually in for 8am, so tend to find a space. (plus it's a co car anyway - not overly bothered if it's parked on the road).

Interesting.

£9.40 return to Newton le Willows.

Going,

7.12am train gets me there for 07.50am. I officially, at present, start work at 8.30am.

So that'd be 30 mins early by the time i've walked to the office.

Homeward bound,

5.19pm train gets me to Newton for 5.59pm.

I officially finish at 5pm. But if i start early, as in 8am, and perhaps work some of my lunch hour and then finish at say 4.10pm, leg it to the station for the 4.22, i can be back at Newton for 5.01pm.

At present, leave home 7.35am, and get home usually about 5.50pm.

Above, would be leaving 6.50-6.55am, and getting home at approx 5.30pm.

Going to be a longer day and going to cost work more but this looks like a fair option. Definately one to consider anyway.

And if you're getting to Newton that early you should be able to park right outside the station ramp on the road. Have a little power nap on the train, breakfast when you get to work. thumbup

I'm on a course in Manchester in a couple of weeks and I'm going to be doing NLW train to Piccadilly. I'm quite looking forward to leaving the car at home for a change.

Just spoke to the fella at NLW. The car parks quite full at the moment at 07:00 but in a couple of weeks there will be an 80 or 90 space car park.

The main car park only holds about 8 cars doesn't it? Most people park on the road outside, but it's good to hear that the new car park will be open soon.

Yer there aren't many spaces are there? People park down the side of the ramp too don't they?
I can't see where new spaces could be put tho? I haven't been there in a while.
