There is a good chance myself and OH could soon be moving to the Manchester area, we would both be 'upgrading' our jobs and the chance to move from semi-rural Lincs to the bright lights is too good a chance to turn down.

Would love to hear of tales, good and bad of the area, not quite sure where to start looking for houses, especially as to begin with our budget will be somewhat modest. South Manchester so far looks appealing, looking on rightmove shows fairly decent housing in the Sale/Didsbury areas.

Ta!

Big gay scene there, I'm sure you and your partner will have a ball.

Canal Street, that's where you want.

My recommendation, as someone who has lived here for 11/12 years.... avoid.

Of the locations you describe, Didsbury is pretty much full of wkers and overspill wannabe gangstas also has a very high car crime stat - lots of decent metal parked up, and only 2 miles from Moss Side, Rusholme, Hulme, Baguely, Burnage, Longsight, Levenshulme and Wythenshawe. Sale can be nice, but it can also be pretty ste if you're at the Baguely/Northenden/Stretford borders, much better looking towards Brooklands and Timperley if you can. Football traffic can be a complete nightmare through sale (I'm a few miles up the road, the other side of Altrincham).

It also rains a lot, is never clear of traffic, and covered in scumbags.

I have to ask, what has attracted you to this dirty scum ridden city, and what kind of hell must you be coming from to make this look good?

ETA: I see you're in Lincs. Seriously, it's better there.

We're both free from family ties so we can move anywhere in the country really, subject to affordability!

Lincs, although nice is the arse end of nowhere, everywhere is a trek to get to and the transport structure and jjobs outlook are terrible.

In order for us to get better jobs and back to civilisation we will have to move to either the Manchester/Cheshire area or down towards Berkshire/Wiltshire, moving down south any increase we would see in wages would be wiped out by the increase in housing cost.

Having been stuck in Lincs the idea of convenient airports, job choice and 'vibrancy' is an attractive proposition for us.

Don't listen to them OP - Manchester's got everything you could want. Just pick where to live carefully. Perhaps rent for 6 months and work it out as you go.

I'd recommend either slap-bang right in the middle, or Cold Feet southern suburbia. Not the 1-4 mile band between the two.

hehe

He's probably one of those people who just love to spread their misery around but who don't have the balls to do anything to change their situation.

Anyway as others have said there's some great bits to Manchester and some crap bits, just like any other largeish city. What kind of budget do you have?

Manchester isn't that bad, i have been here my whole life and in some of the bad areas. Its what you make of it, i am in Eccles right now and tho it is considered a s**thole there are the better areas within.

If you have a few million quid, im a 5 minute drive from "millionaires row"

Working on it. Seriously working on it. Spend as much of my time away from the place as possible. The way things are going at the moment, I'll be out of the place inside 6 months. Thank fk.

Fair enough, it's your call. I spend a lot of time around Berks/Hants/Wilts and tbh I would take the financial hit every single time.

I know I come across as a whinging old and to be fair, I am, but unless there is a very specific reason to be living here, I'd avoid it. If it's work you're after and reasonably paid, there are some properly nice areas that are commutable for the city centre and the airports etc.

Look a bit further afield, and you'll find the motorway network will find you in better places for better money.

I did the exact same move from just outside Lincoln to Salford 7 months ago, and so far I'm loving it, first time I have lived in a decent sized city and love the fact that I can get to do/see pretty much anything I want fairly quickly and easily as its minutes away, like the Arena or the Lowery etc.

I have had no problems with crime or the locals either day to day or on a night out
I am well aware of the reputations of some areas but its not difficult to stay away/out of those bits, there is no reason to go there anyway unless you know someone there, after all even in Lincoln there is the St Giles estate or the Monks road area and I bet you don't think all of Lincoln is rough?

The one Caveat I have to make though is admittedly I do live on the Quays, an area that has been heavily modernised and redeveloped recently and some would say this might have tainted my view but there are just bad and good areas like anywhere else in the country.

Visit the city a few times and get a proper feel of the place yes it rains a lot but that's what jackets are for

We've also been looking at Chester and the surrounding area, extending down to Whitchurch. Although I've driven around the area plenty of times 'intimate' knowledge is lacking.

Going to take a drive over next week to get a feel for the place, stand by for a thread entitled 'Manchester - what a st hole!'

North Shropshire is very nice indeed, my folks are just outside Shrewsbury, I can get there in an hour and ten without pushing too hard, Whitchurch itself is OK, but any of the surrounding villages are pretty good. Chester, I don't really know, but can say that I've never had any problems there.

There are also some nice parts of Runcorn, Oswestry, Northwich etc which are all commutable either by car or train, and all within an hour of the airports (MAN and LPL).
