Going on holiday to West Scotland next week (Fri 20th) from East Yorkshire. Will have a 2.5 yr old with us. The idea is to set off @ 5am & stop for breakfast/leg stretch at about 8am, this should place us between Penrith & Carlisle on the M6 according to Googlemaps.

Can anyone recommend any good places for breakfast or (if the weather is dry) any open/picnic areas for a quick alfresco BBQ breakfast in this area. I don't mind a small detour off the M6 for a pleasant spot as we are looking to take our time during the journey & enjoy the scenery (screaming child permitting!)

Don't know about off the m/way but Tebay services is often voted best in the country. Owned and run by Tebay community I believe.

This isn't far off the M6 at J40 and could be intriguing: http://www.llamakarmakafe.co.uk/

I've driven past lots of times but never eaten there.

+1 for Tebay, it does get pretty busy though.

+ another for Tebay services, I live fairly locally and it is the best service station in the country by a mile, I get to visit enough of them in my job.

+1 for tebay. Especially with kids - on the southbound side they have a duck pond and an indoor play centre. There's a bridge between the north and southbound services.

If you don't mind the detour and like roads and scenery I recommend Hartside Top cafe - here.

When going to Scotland I tend to detour off at J40, up the Hartside Pass to the cafe, carry on to Alston then take the A689 to rejoin the motorway at J44. Lovely lovely roads for 90% of the trip.

Wow, some really good suggestions there. Thank you.

I think we will try the Tebay services.

I did try googling but clicked on a search result that showed a snippet of a 5* review that sounded good. Turned out to be a gay dogging review site boxedin Just hope the wife believes me biggrin

Junction 38 M6 3-4 miles south of Westmoreland services is the Tebay Truck stop.
It is run by the same company as the main services but is a little less busy, with the same food at less pretentious prices and arguably more generous portions.
I would go there every time whether in the truck, car or bike. No question.

Come off at 40 and go into Pooley Bridge, 10 mins max from the motorway and find this place, Granny Dowbekins Tea Rooms, cracking grub in a lovely little village.

For 'clinically consistent' there's a Little Chef just off M40 on the way towards West Cumbria.

Also, Rheged is pretty good for a stop off - run by the same folks as Tebay services though - so perhaps quicker going to the services.

We use this place at work for conferences and the grub is always nice - about 2 mins from J40 towards Penrith Rail station

There's a McDonalds near Cranstons too - if you're feeling un-cultured!

Used to be a good ol transport caff at the back of the Golden Fleece BP garage which is M6 J42 - i think - more Carlisle than Penrith. If it's a good ol fry up you're after!

Is J38 cheaper than Tebay then? Didn't know that! They're only about 2 mins apart too. I'll remember that one.

Some nice little cafes in Kirby Stephen but probably a bit too far off the M6 to be 'handy'.

I think that place is closed now, its never open when I drive past. Penrith truck stop and Dougs Dinner in penrith are great places to go.

I usualy stop at Tebay when I go to visit my mum in Northumberland before coming off M6 at Penrith for a blast over the A686 Hartside Pass from Penrith to Hexham. The food is very good there and its recently had big extension to restaurant and deli shop. On the way back south Killlington Lake services just south of Sedburgh turn off is nice and scenic.
