Residents flatten ugly building
Residents who have lived in the shadow of the "the UK's ugliest building" will have the chance to help demolish it, the council has announced. Work to tear down the Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth is to start on Wednesday, after an attempt to make it a listed building failed.
Ten residents chosen at random from those who call the Tricorn hotline will be asked why they want to demolish it.
Whoever gives the best answer will be selected to start the machines running.
The Tricorn was voted the ugliest building in the country in a poll by Radio 4's Today programme.
One listener described it as a "1960s consumer rat-maze".
But it was the subject of a campaign by the Portsmouth Society, who wanted to get the building listed as a national architectural treasure.
At the time, Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South, Mike Hancock, said: "I am delighted that common sense has prevailed in this matter and that we can move as swiftly as possible now on to demolition."
