I'm looking for somewhere 'special' to go for a meal on Friday week, as near to the coast as possible around Pompey (I live at Rowlands Castle, near Havant).
Prefer Italian/French/Nouveau.

As a start, has anyone been to This place? (I hope their food is better than their website!)

Not specifically looking for any entertainment, in fact will need somewhere quiet to eat!

I would recommend 'Restaurant 36 on the Quay' in Emsworth

Well I can HIGHLY recommend this place for your preference but unfortunately it's not smack bang on the coast, it's on birdham rd on the way to the witterings!

Alternatively there is a very nice Italian place called azzuro in gunwharf...that doesn't get much closer to the coast!!

Not been for years but we used to eat down at Port Solent. Seem to remember some half decent places along there.

Good luck

Drive past 8 Kings Road frequently but don't know its style/ quality.

Rosies Vineyard on Elm Grove (400mtrs from the other place you posted). Incredible food, extensive wine list, superb reputation. Beef Wellington is legendary. Check when booking as they sometimes have live jazz playing in the front dining room.

A Bar Bistro was excellent last time I went but haven't eaten there for a while. Immortalised in one of local author Graham Hurley's crime novels as "the closest Portsmouth came to posh".

Heard great things from various friends/ family about 36 on the Quay as recommended above but not eaten there myself.

Marina Jaks on Hayling Island has superb award winning food. Service can be a bit pants but it's nearly always worth it for the food.

Interesting to know that place gets a good review, another place I've been past but not in. Don't they do afternoon tea as well?

I think they do! It used to be a popular resturant years ago and disappeared according to the father in law. It was a nice atmosphere in there.

scratchchin Some of the top-end restaurants which have been recommended are the sort of thing I was looking for but are very restricted on menu. I understand the reasons for this but on this ocassion I think a wider menu is needed.
Although it's not what I'd pictured in my mind, I quite like the look of the O Sole Mio in Port Solent. Think I'll pop along there for a quick look!

I think i may have the answer for you. My GF loves to venture to michelin star resturants (36 on the quay is one of them). There is another in the new forest also.

However the best by far is the taster menu with wine at JSW in petersfield. They have a deal monday to thursday for £150 for 2 which includes the taster menue and wine and a nights stay in one of the 4 rooms with breakfast. I have herd that they have extended the deal to Fridays but its £200. i have told friends who have thanked me for pointing it in there direction as its a great place.

Just for ref the teaster menu on its own is normaly £150, i was amazed at how well they matched the wine with each dish. i did however get a little drunk smile

Trust me you will love it.

I like it here, its good fun! Quite loud though! I have also heard that restuarant 27 is good, haven't eaten there though, I don't like alot on their menu!

There is a nice french restuarant called La brasserie in Gunwharf, the food there is lovely!

Do you mean Raymond blancs brasserie, its not michelin start but he is a star cheff. It is nice in there and the food is good. I would say its above average kind of resturant but not a high end one.
