I have found the perfect plate for my car due to be auctioned shortly by the DVLA. The plate would be perfect for me as it spells my surname exactly, I have a rare surname and so I am hoping there wont be many others bidding for it. It consists of XXX 1X (The X's represent letters, and the 1 numbers) I am not sure of the best way to go about this. It's reserve is £400, does this mean that perhaps its not that desireable?? I am thinking the best route is to submit a max bid, so that I dont go crazy and bid stupid money on the day, bareing in mind approx 25% has got to be added. Has anyone else bid on a plate from the DVLA's auctions before? If so how much do they normally go above the reserve price??

Register for them to call you on the day, the call you just before the plate comes up and it means you won't lose it for a few quid. AS for reserve vs final price, all depends on the amount of interest. I went for a plate with a low reserve, but gave up as two people fought over it to near 17k, madness. Somethings go cheap, others way past expectation.

Do yourself a table or spreadsheet of what your bidding and what it will cost you after VAT and auction fee though , so there are no surprises

Thanks for that. I dont want to end up paying £17k, but this plate is perfect. Spells my name exactly with no messing with it.

Why dont you register to bid via the internet? Ive done it in the past.

Cup of tea in front of you, mouse in one hand, bank statement in the other (so you can check your limit) and away you go smile

I dont trust myself to do that. I'd end up spending ten grand! and I really dont want to do that! I think I will do an absent bid with a set limit. Its that limit that I am not sure about. I need to be stealthy so er indoors doesnt find out!

A year or so ago I was bidding on the plate YEL 110W (see profile pic for car) and I bid more than I wanted to bid, and then still got pipped at the post. There is not a day goes by I dont regret not hanging on in there as it was the perfect plate. My only consolation is that the winning bidder didnt get it cheap.

Another time I bought a plate that spells my company name perfectly. Paid a relative fortune for it but every time I look at the plate I know I did the right thing (and hopefully its actually worth a fair bit more than I paid for it, but we dont do these things to make money, well at least I dont).

Of course I dont know your financial situation, but if it truly is a 'once in a lifetime opportunity' dont potentially miss out for the sake of one more bid, which with a fixed maximum you obviously cant do.

Just my opinion of course smile

It really is the perfect plate, but, I have to draw the line somewhere. I could spend an awful lot and get it, but it's not really a good time. Most of my cash is tied up. and the cash we do have is earmarked by the wife to get our garden landscaped.
I cant see the plate being that desireable to anyone else, unless of course they have the same surname!
