Poole / Bournemouth
Discussion
I posted this in the lounge before realising there was a regional section!
Does anyone live around these parts? if so what are your thoughts on bringing up a young family (schools etc) and what is the commute like to Waterloo and how much does it cost (I'm getting varied answers on google!)
Cheers
Gareth

Hmm my post didn't seem to appear, so I'll put it again...you just know it'll end up being there in a minute though!
Lived in Bournemouth for 4 years now (student), lived in various parts of Bournemouth over the years
Places I'd avoid living: Boscombe, Winton, Ensbury Park, Charminster
Places I'd like to live: Westbourne, areas of Poole, Christchurch, Southbourne, Alum Chine
Never taken train at rush hour times, but manage to get some quite cheap deals off-peak to Waterloo (£15). Trains are regular and reliable as to be expected, journey takes up to 2 hours.

I live in Bournemouth now, but was bought up in Poole.
The schools in Lower Parkstone - Courthill & Baden Powell have fantastic reputations, but they are very strict on the catchment areas they serve.
Cant help on the commute to Waterloo - but I believe the train from Bournemouth takes 1hr 40 minute 'ish, and they run every half hour or so.
If you want anymore info on the area, feel free to email me or post here !

Lower Parkstone, Lilliput are nice areas. Sandbanks is lovely, but hugely expensive.
If you want a bit more info or opinions on the areas / roads that these places are on, drop me an email!

All those areas are very nice areas and would be great for bringing up a family. Nice and close to the coast as well which you've got to be to make the most of the area. Plenty of good schools in the area. I lived around Bournemouth for 3 years when I was at Uni and worked in Poole also. Love it down there and I'm currently thinking about moving back. Commute into Waterloo from Bournemouth station is about 1hr 45 and will cost you about £500 a month. Had a few friends and colleagues who have done it and its ok. I did it from Winchester for 18 months and it's bearable- but my long office hours made it pretty tough. Are any of you familar with Parkstone, Lilliput or on the Sandbanks Peninsula? I live in North Dorset but work in Wimborne on edge of Poole / Bournemouth conurbation. I go to Poole / Bournemouth frequently as it is the main shopping / leisure / business area in Dorset.
I would echo previous post ref Boscombe, Charminster, Winton but would add West Howe and Kinson to the list you may want to avoid. The area you are looking at is definitely the area to go for if you are set on moving within Poole / Bournemouth IMHO. However, we have had several wealthy clients move out of the said areas (BH13 mainly) and move into rural Dorset in the last couple of years - whether this is 'cashing in', change of lifestyle or otherwise I don't know. There are plenty of nice areas aside from the obvious Lower Parkstone, Lilliput, Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs if you broaden your search - you will also probably save yourself the premium that you undoubtedly pay to be in those areas.
I do visit an elderly client each year however who has a place next to Haven Hotel (overlooking the Sandbanks chain ferry towards Shell Bay) and it must be amazing to wake up to the view everyday. They are amazed at how things have changed on the Sandbanks peninsula, having been there for 20+ years.
As also previously posted, the school catchment area is pretty competitive in the area so you will want to get this checked thoroughly. There are some excellent schools in the area but likewise there are some pretty poor ones too.
Check out http://www.lloyds-group.co.uk/properties/l0006.htm... if you have a spare £13.5m
just for a plot w/o planning!

Not much help beyond what has already been said, but I'd agree with most of it!
On an off topic note, Carl, where does where you live (if you remember, I used to live not far from you) fall under in the 'districts' of Bournemouth?
I very much enjoyed living on West Way, much more pleasent than Charminster when I first moved to Bournemouth...!

I've lived in Lilliput/Lower Parkstone for about 6 years now having moved from Berkshire. Absolutely wonderful place - clean, safe and tons to do (beaches, cafes, etc etc). The ONLY two downsides are that there are a lot of pretentious people around who think having the latest car/watch/boat etc is everything and they want to make sure you know about it (Although that was common in Berkshire anyway) and property is expensive. Are any of you familar with Parkstone, Lilliput or on the Sandbanks Peninsula? It would now take me a lot to move away - although, as someone else has said, moving inland a few miles to the more rural areas is very tempting as things get very busy in the Summer. Oh..commute to London is 1:50 if running well.
If you want any specifics just ping me!
Cheers

I live in Northborne, it's a nice quiet suburb with some very well respected school's (like Hillview, people actually move into the catchment area purely on its reputation).
Not all of Charminster is bad particularly Westway/Charminster Avenue area its mainly the Bournemouth end which is not so good. The same goes for Winton, but conversely the nearer you get to Bournemouth the nicer it gets especially the west side of the area.
As has been said before avoid both East Howe and West Howe, give Wallisdown a bit of a wide birth aswell. I'm not a huge fan of Canford Heath or Bearwood particularly.
There are some nice places on the outskirts of the town Wimborne,Verwood et al. The only problem with these is lack of transport links via rail,i.e its a long way to Bournemouth Station. If that doesn't bother you too much the Colehill area of Wimborne is very nice and parts of Ferndown are nice aswell.... just avoid Tricketts Cross
All of the the above is IMHO naturally.

It is a debatable point - some call it Queens park and some Charminster Hill. We use Queens Park when putting an address.
I've been commuting for 3 years from Bournemouth and its truely hellish!
If you get the 06:26 from B'mouth you'll get to Waterloo at 08:15.
The journey is about 1hr 40mins and will currently cost you 144.90 a week!! Which is out rageous!
I can be done but my god I'd avoid it if you can, I'm doing everything possible to stop and get a job down here.
Good luck!

Would very much agree with that, put it this way I called the police when I lived the Bournemouth end...West Way on the other hand, lovely.
Although as T40ORA said, plenty of other nice places around Bournemouth/Poole; although for your sanity on the commute I reckon looking at living on the West side of BMouth/Poole would be a bad idea!
