Ideal First Car?
Discussion
The Mrs. has just passed her driving test and is looking for a first car.
She's 25, so insurance isn't too much of an issue. However, we're looking for something that's not going to break the bank in terms of running costs, so tax, mpg and insurance are important factors. Plus we're looking at no more than £2500 max.
Any ideas (sensible of course)? And before anyone asks, it's going to double my insurance for her to go on the Octy.

MX5.
Neil will agree (I hope!), his Mrs has one too.
We did have one, until she could no longer fit her ever expanding belly under the steering wheel. Now we have a dreary 1.6 Focus estate called Ernie. Neil will agree (I hope!), his Mrs has one too.
Mk2 MX5 is preferable as you will have power steering - important to a new driver.
New shaped mini? Great fun to drive and easy to use around town including parking, great for a new driver.
Failing that my wife also runs an MX5 and loves it.

Edited to say that I should have read your post properly about budget...... so MX5 it is!

It depends if she's interested in driving or not (I have heard of people who don't enjoy it...
).
If she is MX-5, if not then a little hatch is the best bet as they'll be cheap enough to fuel/tax/insure/service.
If that's the case, Clio/Corsa/Punto/Fabia or something of similar shape?

Something like your old steed would be ideal me thinks.

What's insurance like?
Didn't they get a rep with insurance companies for being driven by knob heads?
She looked at a Ford Puma. The insurance on that was going to be in the region of £730.Didn't they get a rep with insurance companies for being driven by knob heads?

She did say the Fiesta looked a little "chavy". Then she said she liked the look of a Peugeot 206 1.4 that had chrome 18"s put on it! LOL!

Women, eh?
The insurance may not be too fierce then!

Don't get me started!

Tongue, firmly in cheek!

I've found a 2002 206 XSi. It's a 1.6, so shouldn't be too bad to run, yet pokey enough to keep her amused for a couple of years. The only problem is the reg starts PO02.... so it looks like it reads "POO", which means she's less than enthusiastic about it!
UPDATE: Well we went to view a little runabout this afternoon in Bracknell - and put a deposit on it!
It's a 1998 R reg Ford Fiesta LX 1.25 Zetec in Radiant Red. Electric windows, mirrors and drivers seat, and even has the Quickclear front windsceen. 87000 miles, Ford FSH and one old dear owner from new.
All for a shade over £1300.
I know it's hardly a Zonda, but not bad a for a first attempt. She's already banned me from putting a PH Smiley on it, but I'll sneak one in somewhere! Now all it needs is a Focus RS block dropped in - now where's my chequebook.....
