Renting somewhere between Swindon and Southampton?

Got a good set of search criteria from friends that want to move in together.

Where would you recommend for a couple with settled jobs in Swindon and Southampton?

Swindon worker happy to drive.
Southampton worker prefer train but more flexible.
First time living together so probably renting, must be vaguely affordable!
Can be city, town, village as long as transport works for them.

Salisbury? Andover? Don't really know train lines that run from Swindon.

Swindon is on the London to Bristol line. Going north or south by train is a pain. Winchester or Salisbury would be easy for Soton by train and about an hour to Swindon by car. Or over to Westbury way if both want to go by train.
