Do they really expect drivers to follow the 55 mile diversion?

No but they've covered their arses when people ignore it and Southampton and the close surrounding area turns in to a car park.

I'm unsure if there are any good routes here - locals will try back roads, non-locals will use Google maps and therefore everyone will be driving similar routes anyway.

Best advice - don't use your car or a bus in that area this weekend smile

Just found out about this. I am taking the kids to a cyclocross meeting in Tilehurst and planned on getting over to Lymington from the Island. I cant even go over the mortorway and cut up to Andover through Romsey as that road is closed as well ???? which I dont get what happens if you live in a village on that route ? I think I will go over to Portsmouth and then A3 it

The long diversion is only for large vehicles. That said, it's a bit of a mess out there.

Unfortunately I've got to go to Gatwick tonight and I live near Hythe on the edge of the forest. Only good thing is they land at 2330, so traffic should be light (he says, hopefully)

According to the AA traffic site, Southampton looks very busy at the moment. I'm in Salisbury and have been expecting a lot of traffic but it doesn't look too bad at the moment.
