Driving lights Rant
Discussion
Sorry just having a rant.
Why do people feel it's acceptable to drive in low light with rain and spray with just driving lights on. It's great that people can see them coming but do they realise there rear light are not on.
I gave up trying to get so many almost invisible cars to put there lights on.
Grrrrrrrrrr

On my way home from work at traffic lights in Polegate and this woman is in front of me with just the DRLs on her car. Its winter time and pitch black and essentially I cannot see her from behind (fnar). I nipped out my car to tell her and the blank look I got back nearly did me in. Eventually after much prodding random buttons (to her) she managed to get her full beams on but you just knew she really had no idea. Her dash was all nice and lit so why bother??

My theory is that a lot of cars with DRLs also have auto sensing lights. Under low light conditions, such as rain/spray/fog, the driver assumes that the car has sensed the low light and switched the dipped beam on when in fact the auto sensor hasn't detected the low light. On my Audi, under low light conditions, I always check the lights on indicator to be sure that the dipped beam is on.Oh, and many of the other drivers are just dimwits.

It is frustrating.
Another one is people who won't use main beam at night. I was following two cars along the A35 at night the other day. They were fairly spread out, so an overtake would mean taking both cars and would require a long stretch of straight road. They were doing 45mph in a 60 on a clear, dry night. But the car at the front refused to use main beam, so it was impossible to see if the road was straight for long enough to make a safe overtake.
Why not use main beam? Why not make the road ahead more visible? I really don't understand it!

Since nobody's mentioned foglights...
There seems to be 2 kinds of foglight retard...
One is simply too stupid to remember to turn them off (if they can't remember to turn them off, can they remember to book an MOT or put their handbrake on when they park on a hill?)
The other is the f
kwit chav who thinks it's "cool" to drive about with their blue/green/red sidelights (illegal) and foglights. Since ramming the little turds off the road is considered "inappropriate", I've angled my foglights upward to blind them instead - quick couple of flashes usually gets their attention but they just stare blankly at me from under their white, offset, Addidas baseball cap.
Using foglights when visibility is more than 100M is a traffic offence I believe but the bottom line is...
IT'S NOT f
kING FOGGY!

Yes that is also very annoying and has been a problem for years. I have notice that modern cars now turn the fogs off after engine off on has happened where older cars still required manual switching. There seems to be 2 kinds of foglight retard...

The DRL issue I've been noticing more and more over the last year. People need to be educated or DRLs include rear lights?

Exactly. Or why not adopt Volvo design by always having side lights on?
That was a factory option between '99 and 2006, you had to request the lights off if you didn't want the DRLs. between '93 and 99, most models had a tiny switch that switched the sidelights/DRLs on and off. They did however (and still do I believe) activate the rear marker lights with the DRLs. Modern ones are really smart - if you have the tailgate open (large load etc) it'll automatically move the lights from the tailgate to the D-Pillars to maintain safety. 'Cos Volvos are the dogs doo-dahs. (guess what I drive
