I posted this in the Homes section but as I'm in Poole may get more luck here....

I'm just sorting out the gating and automation for my self-build in Dorset (Poole).

I have a quote for the following:

To supply and fit a Faac 746 ERZ 20 sliding gate operator, and galvanised racking, the unit has a keyed release system for emergency use. One set of Faac photocells, two hand wired multiple safe edges with 80mm deep profiles, with a sched cat 2 controller. One up graded radio control system (Marantec or Hormann) to allow gate and garage door systems to be operated from the same hand held transmitters.

Which is coming in at a total cost, including installation, of £2349.00 plus VAT

That's excluding the entry system as follows: A BFT/Diracomm wireless system, with external surface mounted module and keypad. One internal telephone on a cradle - can be plugged into any wall socket in the house. The control unit would need to be in the garage, with a fused spur to wire into.

Total cost including installation £1098.00 plus VAT

Then I need to get the metal gates and railings on top of that.

Anyone think this seems expensive or is that around the price now for this stuff? My builder did his last sliding gate system in 2006 which were around £1600 but he's not got any recent projects to compare.

All gate systems will vary on cost depending on how complicated the install is.

If that is including the gates, sounds ok to me.

I agree it would be a good price if it included the gates. Alas, it does not.

Sorry, skim read your `op.

I still think its reasonable, due to the fact the steel runners and all of the 'groundwork', connections and supplying the materials is included.

To get an idea, have a search on the internet for the Automation stuff to see what the costs are.

ETA: the gate motor itself is over £500 plus vat.

My understanding is the groundwork will be done by my builder. The gate guys are pretty much doing just there bit and then commissioning.

Anyway, another company are quoting.

Ok Cool.

Im sure there are probably alternative makes that will do the same job a little cheaper.

Gary

I'll give you a bell when I get 5 mins. That sounds a lot. I have a Videk entryphone with telephone interface, which goes in series with the house phones. Anyone at the gate, house phones ring. You can then open gates with a #600 or similar number. A handset on the hall wall is hard work. From cpc.co.uk.

I have Hormann garage automation and separate receiver (HET-24 I think) to open gates for vehicle entry, single remote does both, with a Toca fingerprint scanner for pedestrian access, which partially opens the gates. No need to carry a remote when on foot !

All my automation is BFT, which came from Gates Systems Ltd.

There're doing a rear sliding gate in Dorset Lake Ave (another of our walking routes), the builders have welded the sliding track to an RSJ and cast that in the ground. Much better idea than trying to get the track level in concrete.

Chaps in Romsey did my gates and railing fabrication.

I'm around this week. Let's meet up. If you see anything in the village with a PH smiley, it's probably me. Except the AMG badged old shape E Class estate.
