Big up for a new found tyre place

I've been using Micheldever for some time now but the drive there and the wait can take a whole chunk out of my day so I decided to shop around as I now need a set of rears - again!
I remembered a place in Havant called CJH Tyres, they call themselves a 'Performance Tyre and Wheel Specialist' so I cave them a call.
The guy said an initial price was just over £110 but would do them for £106 inc. I rang Micheldever who quoted £91.10 inc. so I rang back CJH who matched the price - bit of a result I thought (nice mark up on the original price).

For the record 225/50/16 SO3 Pole Position 'Z' rated.

I'm well chuffed, if you try them make sure you've done your homework on prices and give them notice as they might need to get them in from their warehouse.

Not taking anything away from Micheldever, they have always treated me very well, but I just saved myself 1/2 day and about 80 miles.

Not sure on the rules of posting phone number/address so I'll wait to see what Ted/Mod says.

Good recommendation.

My top tip for Micheldever to save time is:
- ring up and check they have what you want in stock (and that the price is right).
- park in the station car park next door and walk into reception to buy your tyres (thus avoiding the huge queue).
- take the tyres to your friendly local tyre emporium for fitting.

It obviously doesn't save you the drive there and back, but we're all looking for excuses to get out in the car anyway, aren't we?

CJH are also a transport company. When you want something out of the ordinary they just get their nearest driver to divert to any bulk warehouse who offer CJH the best deal. Not a bad way of working if you ask me.

The mark up is huge so it pays to drive a hard bargin. Some years back CJH worked hard to get me a good price when presented with the best I had found elsewhere. I was on route to them when I passed a new fitter so popped in and they halved the price. They're not there now, I wonder why.

had the same experience with F1 tyres in Hedge End. Read on PH they had done some favours for people for freebies on the basis they would go back for tyres. They helped fix a broken valve for Claire for free on her TVR. So I rang them for a quote, they did a price match, e-mailed micheldever for a price, forwarded it to F1, who not only matched it but beat it, and tootled up the road 30 seconds to the fitters and had it done. Sweet.

Just to round the story off. I went up there this morning and got the new ones fitted, I was in and out inside 30 mins. and slip-sliding all the way home with the releasing compound and wet roads doing their level best to throw me in to the nearest solid object. A couple of (largely unintentional) Shnozz/DustyC Thorney Island style starts and things seem to be getting better already.

Top service with very friendly chaps who even gave me a healthey discount on a full set of tyres for the 3rd car.

I'll be going back and hope some of you guys do too.

be careful on this front mate. when I was going to fit new rubber before LM this year I was worried about getting rid of the coating before the ridiculous driving antics through France. I suggested some, erm, enthusiastic starts (well, doughnuts actuall) and IIRC it was Joolz who said be very careful to spin the wheels shortly after changing tyres as the lube they use to fit them on the tyre can mean the wheels spin, whereas the tyre doesnt - and it rips the valve out...

I tell you though in today's conditions I was taking it well easy, slightest hint of spin and I was easing the throttle off.

Hope it's better tomorrow as Jo is taking the car in to work.

not looking good for VW on Sunday

Was coming home Tuesday night and followed Gilesy in his Griff 500. As he put his foot down on the dual carriageway opposite B&Q the back end leapt out

Well with the recent condition of mine over the last few weeks and me being a tight git and getting every last penny's worth of rubber out of them it's been a similar story here.
Possibly the most impresive though was at a set of lights, I was turning left joining a dual carriageway and it has a nasty bit of negative camber. The traffic from the right was stood still, my lights had turned green and I did the most amazing Hawaii 5-0/Starsky & Hutch/any yank TV or film tail end slide out of the junction and away up the road using both lanes.
It was at this point I figured I'd better ring CJH and get them to order the tyres in.

Won't make VW as hopefully I'll be buggering off somewhere drier this weekend for a bit - have fun!
