This road seems quite spooky , particularly the long left hander , are their any "urban legends" ?

Dunno, but it's now 50 mph I believe.

I've walked next to the rise, and the valley below was full of cloud/fog, with just eerie tree tops poking through.

Yep, 50mph now - I've got a contract just up the road from there, always arrive and depart quite rapidly. wink

It's always been 50mph hasn't it? For as long as I can remember at least. I lived at the bottom of the straight in the opposite direction of the camera for 17yrs and now live the other side.

Nope, was NSL in the nineties (I drove to Midhurst every other weekend from Nottisham for ten years)

That's part of the Fernhurst TVR test route, down to Midhurst and back up, it used to be my 'long' route back home when I had my servicing done there smile

I walked from Albert Hall to Waterloo. Caught the train to Haslemere, then attempted to walk to Midhurst.

This road was my undoing, as after Fernhurst it ain't pedestrian friendly. I set off across the fields, and somehow ended up by that socking great transmitter. Eventually get into Midhurst via Easbourne..

..first pint at the Bricklayers didn't touch the sides biggrin

I remember that hill very well from a summer afternoon in my childhood.

Probably in 1964 or 5, a family day out for a summer Sunday afternoon picnic (Happy days!) Mum, Dad, Me and Little Sister. Dad's old Austin A35 conked-out, dead as a doornail, half way up that steep hill, right on the bend. In those days the road was narrower, steeper and the bend tighter. I can remember few of the details apart from the very real fright and tangible danger from the other cars hammering up the hill, rounding the blind left hand bend to encounter a knackered old motor sitting in the road with two kids peering at them out of the back window. At the time I couldn't understand why my Mum made us get out and sit in the hedge.

I imagine only good luck and Mum's good sense prevented me from being a ghostly spectre doomed to haunt that stretch of the A286 for all time.

I wouldn't mind haunting the pub at the bottom of the hill though. that'd be alright.

Here's the story of one recent unfortunate who came to grief and lost his life on these bends.

Motorcyclist dies at Henley bends

Three more motorcyclists have died on the roads of Sussex in the past week, one of them on the A286 at the Henley bends, between Midhurst and Fernhurst.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident last Thursday evening involving a 26-year-old man from Chichester.

Steven Eccles, of Woodlands Lane, was the 13th motorcyclist to die in the county this year.

Thursday's victim was riding a Kawasaki motorbike south, towards Midhurst, when he went off the road at a bend.

Police were called to the scene at 7.40pm. They said no other vehicles were thought to be involved.

The biker lost control of his machine for some reason. An inquest is expected.

His family travelled from their home to Chichester on Tuesday to make a formal identification.

Only a month ago, police urged bikers to do everything they could to make sure family and friends they left behind in the morning would not be mourning their non-return that night.

Inspector Damian Merrifield said after Thursday's fatality: "We have now had another motorcyclist death on our roads and the death toll is rising.

"I understand and appreciate that the weather is perfect for bikers, but we urge them to look out, take that extra bit of care and take their time and give cars and other road users a wide berth."

He also urged drivers of other vehicles to 'think bike'.

"If you're a motorist, check and double check that your next move isn't going to put a motorcyclist or any other road user at risk – everyone has a significant part to play in road safety," the inspector said.

Used to be the local Kennels, before they knocked them down and built another house in there. They've got a couple of nice cars. DB9, Defender...
