Hi all,

I'm off to a holiday park just outside Redruth tomorrow and wondered what the traffic is likely to be like so I can work out a sensible time to leave from Bournemouth. The OH is pregnant so the thought of spending hours and hours in the car isn't filling her with joy!

It's been a few years since I last went down that way and I recall the A30 being a pretty clear/fast route, is this still the case or is it likely to be rammed with everyone taking advantage of an extra couple of days holiday? If so what other routes would people suggest....I'm also making the return journey at some time on Monday so the reverse of the above would be great.

Thanks for any pointers.

Good news and bad I suspect.....

Normally on a long weekend the roads (all of them?) would be rammed with folks trying to get away, and it may not be any different this weekend, however we have just had the easter break and many folks will have been doing it last weekend, possibly/probably unlikely to all be going BOTH weekends? So you maybe pleasently suprised

I'd say A30 is probably as good a route as any, my advice (on a normal long weekend anyway) would be leave as early as possible (I prefer to do this kind of trip "overnight", i.e. plan to arrive early morning) but certainly plan to be down in cornwall before the majority of the holiday makers are even out of bed. I have been known to travel the night before (in this case Thursday) and stay an extra night but then you have the extra expense of another night and how many people will be thinking the same and still you have traffic to sit in?

Coming back is equally (or more so?) a gamble, do you leave REALLY early on Monday and travel whilst most others are still enjoying their holiday? Do you leave in the middle of the day with the rest of the "beat the big rush" brigade? or leave as late as possible so everyone else is out of the way before you start?

I hope the traffic is lighter than it normally is on a long weekend for you and you can enjoy more time in Cornwall.

Holiday park near Redruth, sounds like Beruit Butlins...

Only joking - gotta say that as one of my clients owns a holiday park near Redruth, if it's GV then it's kept immaculate and is a very nice place to be.

Usually Sat mornings now gets queued around the single lane bit at Temple on the Bodmin by-pass, other than that it's just heavy but moving normally. Might be a bit quiter as many people are here already having stayed from last weekend.

You may want to consider your journey home as everyone will be leaving Monday afternoon, perhaps stay another night/leave early Tuesday.

There isn't really any other option to using the A30, detours around the North or South on A39 or A38 respectively won't be any better as there's more single carriageway.

As above, I'd suggest leaving as early as possible both directions.

Thanks for the replys, just had a look at the info and it's a Park that overlooks the beach at Portreath....looks ok!

I was thinking the same, always a bit a of a gamble on what time to leave; I'm wondering with the Wedding on tomorrow wether loads of people will be sat indoors watching the TV or attending street parties pretending to be royalists! so that should leave the roads nice and quiet for us to amble on down there!

I agree that Monday could be a bit of a busy one, I have a feeling we'll be leaving pretty early anyway, we've got to be out of our place at 10 anyhow so will probably be making a move then.

If it was up to me I would be travelling late at night or early morning but don't think the rest of the group will be up for it.
