Wonder if the Regional PH-ers can assist me. Well actually a colleague.

He (and his partner) are moving from the NW to Bristol due to a new job. Not having any experience of the area, and due to time being fairly short they don't have much chance to find the right place. He is going to be working near Filton, but happy for a small commute. They are both 24, no kids and are looking for somewhere to rent (in the max £800 bracket - and for a £800 price tag must be good). House or apartment with garden.

Any suggestions of areas or particulars (or places to avoid).

Are they looking for city living or a nice pad in the countryside?

Either way, they should stay away from Bradley Stoke!

I would imagine the Clifton area would be the nicest, within easy reach of Filton. Whether anything can be had in that price range is another matter though.

Would be able to get a decent semi with garden in Filton for that much. There are some nice roads in the area.

Not a great deal to do in Filton, though.

Do they know anyone else in Bristol? If they want to be a bit more central for the social/nightlife side of things, they'll be able to get a flat near the centre, but it might not have a garden.

Westbury On Trym is also alright, has some nice areas, only a short distance to Filton, still probably 20 minutes with traffic. Watch out for some areas, though. They advertise as Westbury-On-Trym, but it's really Southmead.

Somewhere around Westbury would probably be a good bet, has enough nice pubs, restaurants/takeaways and it's close enough to the centre or Cribbs for shopping/entertainment.

At 24 I'd go for Clifton (if possible in the price) or somewhere else central-ish.

It really does depend what kind of area they want to live in. Filton is fairly easy to get to to from most areas. I've worked in Filton on and off for 13yrs and have lived in various places from Fishponds, Henbury, Southmead/Westbury, Portishead and now Weston Super Mare.

When they're said they don't mind a small commute, how far/long is small? Some areas are lovely to live in, but commuting can then be a real pain. I live nearly 30 miles from where I work, but time wise it can be about the same as some people who are trying to commute through Bristol.

Cheers for the replies so far. Social-wise, i don't think they would mind travelling to go see some livelier action (don't read into that!), so a quiet place may be ok. Garden is a must (dog). Travel to work, anything that keeps the costs and wasted time to a minimum i suppose. I wouldn't put a figure on it, but it's a consideration factor depending on what they find.

I commute about 25 miles into Bristol centre from a Wiltshire village - takes 30-35 minutes if you time it right. Colleagues live on the Gloucester Road (i.e. circa 3 miles into the city) and it takes them an hour on the bus. Come home time, I'm in my local with a pint by the time the bus turns up to take them home.

Clifton certainly nicest mentioned but I'd imagine you may get a shoe box for that kind of money - cheap it ain't.
Many turn their nose up at Bradley Stoke - never lived there so don't really know but it doesn't appear to be rough, just a bit dull/samey. Should get a decent sized place and garden garage for £800 and it's dead close to Filton though RR/MOD traffic may make it feel further.

Westbury on Trym might be worth considering. It isn't far from Filton, is quite a nice area and is only 10 - 15 minute taxi ride in to the bar, pub and restaurant area's of town

Winterbourne is ten minutes from Filton and a pleasant place to live. Traffic is usually reasonable at peak times between the two locations. Rentals for the figure that you have quoted are possible. It's only seven miles to the centre of Bristol and yet it's quite rural; lots of country walks and good dog walking.

That's where I'm based. It's not a bad place, but I'd be choosing to head more towards either Hambrook or Winterbourne Down rather than Winterbourne.

Either way, it's close enough to everything you'd need - good access to Filton and the city centre, Cribbs, shops and a supermarket nearby, great curry house etc.

Just don't bother with the Dragon pub. It might look like your typical village pub surrounded by quaint houses - but it's strictly locals only - and rough at that.

Nicer than nearby Bradley Stoke in my opinion and rent is reasonable.

We live in Severn Beach, great properties out here, 6 miles from Bristol Center straight down the A4, £3 open return on the train to Temple Meads...

However, Bradley stoke is ok, But as said, very 'Samey'. I am always delivering there and I feel like without the sat nav it would be similar to a grass maze to get out of! Great for dogs and transport though

Add the Westbury 8 (pubs), the best Italian in the UK (won the Gordon Ramsay program), a fine Indian (and two very worthy ones) and Church Road chippie etc

As above, not far into town either - Clifton is 10-15 minutes and for the most part utterly trouble free. I rarely see any BiB when out. In town it can be a bit different.

10mins from Cribbs Causeway Mall (M5 J17), 10-15 minutes from Filton.

No1 bus route passes into town and to The Mall. Westbury Village has a lot going in all directions.

Dog would be the only renting issue I would imagine. Plenty of decent properties about.

Maybe avoid the White Horse for a while too as they were busted the other week wink

Your choice for extra 2 pints?

Post Office Tavern
Victoria
Mouse
White Lion
Dirty Duck
Prince of Wales

Haha! Really? What for? serving 15 year olds, allowing them to smoke weed in the beer garden and take drugs in the toilets?

Dirty Duck and Post Office Tavern. Don't visit them that often, but when I do, I sort of wonder why I don't go to them more often. They let their dogs wander round aswell, which just makes it feel like a nice pub. The Victoria is the same, but if your not a regular, you just get stared by everyone laugh

They're all nice, really.
