My daughter starts work at Derriford hospital Plymouth around August this year, what's the area like and where's a decent area around there to live?
Or more to the point, where to avoid.

Derriford isn't a bad area, nor is Woolwell and Roborough is passable. It's only when you get closer to town you need to look closer.

Generally, but only as a sweeping generalisation, avoid North Prospect, Devonport and Stonehouse!

Lots of new(ish) developments between Crownhill and Roborough with lots of starter homes.
Shirley, they can't all be bad?

She'll be renting until she knows what she's doing in a couple of years. A quick look last night turned up places like Bere Alston and the surrounding area which don't look too bad from Google street view and price wise. She wants somewhere chavless where she can park her car without mirrors being ripped off etc.

LOL, her other choice was Exeter but she ended up with Plymouth.

Bere Alston is quite nice but a bit remote, I'm assuming that work and tv would not quite cut it as far as life goes!?

Tavistock might be a reasonable compromise, I find that there's so much to do in Plymouth itself that I need to be within taxi distance for nights out etc.

Many thanks for both these offers, it's a very kind thought and it's always a welcome option if she can't find somewhere straight away.

My first reaction was the same but she's spent most of her first 5 years at uni sharing houses with people she didn't initially know apart from a few minutes conversation. On the flip side neither of you know my daughter so you could be taking on a tenant from hell. laugh

My nephew and his girlfriend stayed with us when they first came to Plymouth a couple of years ago. She is a nurse and walked to work!

We have pretty much decided to let a room later this year anyway.

Thanks, I'll let her know, she'll know what's happening properly in a month or so. So far she only has the job offer, no dates apart from they start sometime in August.

I can vouch for Rupert and the location, sound guy, I store a couple of Mk1 Golfs up there.

It's all alright providing you avoid areas of student letting- lots of burglary due to dopey students leaving valuables on display.

That and the run down areas.

At the end of the day, what's more important: a nice house you don't own or an extra couple of hundred in the back pocket?

Few questions which may rule out few areas;

Car- will she need parking? City can be a nightmare for it and visitors will need a permit.

Cost- is she looking for a flat or house? Some nice cheap flats to rent under the Tamar Bridge in Saltash. They have a balcony and look out on the river, quite nice to chill out in an evening. Also very close to some pubs.

Bus routes?

Etc, etc..... smile

She has a car and will need it probably due to unsocial hours she may have to work. She was looking at Saltash last night and there were some reasonably priced places where you mention, not too bad for travelling although I don't know how busy the Tamar bridge can get. She's planning a long weekend in early summer to check the area out.

My parents live in saltash, it's quite nice for the price.

Riverside is always good, latchbrook, some areas of st stephens and pilmere.
Bridge traffic flow is pretty good since they have put in a tag system for locals. You can pay monthly too so no stopping to pay at the booths. As a bonus, all Slash traffic has it's own lane across- most locals have the Tamar tag so generally doesn't get backed up like it used to.

If she can get one of the flats with a balcony, she'd have to spend quite a lot more to get something as novel across the bridge.

She's been living in Brighton for 5 years so prices there are chicken feed in comparison plus she'll be earning a good wage for a graduate.

Saltash isn't a great place to live, especially factoring in the toll costs.
I wouldn't rate Roborough very highly either.
Plymstock or the upper parts of Plympton are decent enough.
