Dear All,

a job and thus house move to said Roman town is on the cards.
Any regional PH'ers care to comment on what it's like, any sink estates I should avoid or nearby villages I should consider?

On the plus side I have observed a splendid Waitrose and the old part of town looks pretty but zero parking for houses there,

regards,
Jet

Try the area to the east of Cirencester - Bibury/Coln St Aldwyns/Fairford/Lechlade/Cricklade

Lovely place round there, my Gran lives in Chedworth so uses Cirencester for all her shopping etc. Nice roads round there too, I always look forward to the drive up there smile

Ciren is lovely. Really really lovely. There aren't many places around there I wouldn't live...

Agreed. Although Stroud is closeish it's a bit down market. Pretty much all of the villages and small towns are nice though just find one off the main roads. In Ciren itself watch out for slighly inebriated students from the Agricultural College smile

Fantastic driving roads in the Cotswolds too, but a few to many mobile cameras on the A417 and A419.

I live in tetbury which is about 11 miles outside of cirencester. Nice place! Avoid STROUD like the plauge! Its one of the worst places around to live :s

Ciren is great, lots of decent pubs around and places to eat in town. Plenty of good driving roads without cameras and despite what someone said Stroud is very scenic again with good pubs and a trip up th W in Nailsworth in a decent car is a must, its Gloucestershires version of Stelvio!

Also in the defence of Stroud, it too has a Waitrose, and it is bigger than the one in Cirencester!!

Living between the two, my only problem is the nearest supermarket I have in either direction is a Waitrose... why does nipping in to buy some doughnuts always result in a £50+ bill.....

Yikes I live in Stroud and wouldn't describe it as the worst place to live! There are plenty of small villages in the Stoud Valley area which are wonderful, depending on your needs. If you want to live in an area with good access to motorways/main roads but still has a genuine rural feel then some of the villages around Stroud are perfect as they are within a 15min drive of Cirencestor and the M4+M5 Motorways

Also, I work in Tetbury which is a very nice market town, plenty of stunning houses around and just enough local facilities to survive. Tetbury has good access to the M4 to which is useful but beyond that there aren't many evening activities, some of the pubs are pretty low rent and no decent takeaway.

'coz you're a greedy, er, person? smile

I am also a fan of Waitrose jam doughnuts, they're the only ones I've tried with "real" raspberry jam i.e. there's seeds in it rather than the red sugar syrup of lesser 'nuts.
It could of course be red sugar syrup with added seeds but maybe I should remove my tinfoil hat,

Jet

Haha judge a town based on a trip to the hair dresser - fantastic. Now if you go to the hair dressers near the Victoria pub near the bus station/cinema then I agree based on that area Stroud does look like a st hole. That said the Vic isn't bad for a few bevies on a Saturday night.

Thankfully I live outside of the town centre and am in a great position to blast around the lanes/B roads to and from Gloucester and on my drive to work I sometimes go "over the top" via Minchinhampton which is fantastic apart from some of the cattle grids being a tad harsh. From Stroud if you take the A46 toward Cheltenham up to Birdlip this can be a rewarding drive and (touch wood)I have never encountered a speed camera/police speed check along the road ;-)

With the VW Corrado club we went for a Cotswold tour which took us from Cirencestor toward bourton on the water, then Whitney, back up toward chipping norton, via Stow on the wold then finishing at Birdlip for Chips & Pie at the Air Balloon - in all took circa 4hours inc stopping for tea & biscuits in Stow on the Wold and was a fantastic drive!!! You really don't have to look to far beyond the main roads around Gloucester-Swindon-Oxford triangle to find some classic cross country roads.

I use to get my hair cut in just hair at the top of town.........anyway enough about hair :-p your spot on there dave! Brilliant roads out towards burford from ciren and if you wana go the extra mile carry on to chipping norton smile one of my favorite roads around the stroud area is probably from bussage to bisley, then onto birdlip. Love driving the mx5 on that road biggrin I'm sure your faniliar with this road???

Just about to sell my house in Reading (hopefully!) to move out this way. My girlfriend is currently living in Gloucester and working in Stroud, so i am hoping to find somewhere around Cirencester to live too.

This thread is already giving me ideas, thanks!! smile

Hi Pete

Its a great area to live, although the narrower fast roads are more suited to the G33 than the Tuscan, because Gloucestershire County Council are amongst the worst in the UK at road repairs, although they do look fantastic in comparison with Cheltenham Council. (like you I sold the G33 and acquired a Tuscan). Having said that some of the roads are awesome in the Tuscan wink

I live near Cheltenham and am lucky enough to have Fish Hill on my doorstep

Hi Nick,
I saw your G33 in the classifieds a while back, gorgeous it was too.
Mine went to Norway, yours went to Germany, funny eh?
My Tuscan went to a mate of mine and he's just put it up for sale actually, i am rather brassic due to a career change but my chosen career allows me access to some fun cars anyway smile
Looking forward to getting to know the area driving
P.
