Any great routes on the moor. Been up there today around Haytor and it seems promising.

Anyone out there point me to the best roads on the moor.

My new GB270 Wagon needs to explore....

There's a couple really.

1) Start at tavistock. head out to Two Bridges, double back right, through Princetown and back to Yelverton and A386 back to Tavy

2) Probably the best. Start at Bovey Tracey/Trago - Head toward Moretonhampstead on the main A382 - quite a windy fun road though, with narrow bits. smile Left at Moretonhampstead, down to Two bridges, take a left and head down to Dartmeet, Widecombe in the Moor, and back to Bovey. As a little hint, there is a right turn off the road to Dartmeet signposted Hexworthy, and there is a nice little narrow road which goes through hexworthy, goes past Hexworthy Tor (carpark to get out and see views) and then down to a Reservoir. smile

Checked your profile for an idea of a start point, Surrey is a bit far out!!!

I like the route from Saltash to Callington and then to Tavistock, some nice bends and straights good scenery all the way. From Tavistock up on to the moor through Two Bridges to Princetown and then back to Plymouth through Yelverton. Nice general route with options along the way to avoid following slow traffic.

I need to stretch the legs of my new car so might go for a hoon on Saturday, quite early if you fancy it, goes for you too Jason and anyone else.

Cheers guys, just what I'm after.

Sorry can't do Saturday due to work but will hopefully get along to some local meets/runs as and when.

Oh profile needs an update, moved to sunny Sidmouth 6 months ago.

I tend to start my drives on Dartmoor at Ide then head across to Twin Bridges, down to Yelverton before turning back towards Dartmeet and back to the A38. There are also some fairly open, but single track roads up around Sheepstor which are pretty good.

I live just on the edge of Dartmoor at the moment and tend to follow this sort of route when heading out that way - Start at Dunsford, down through Moretonhampstead to Princetown triangle then back through Dartmeet, Bovey and either up to Moreton again or around the edge back to Dunsford.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&a...

Lots of animals on the road in some places and a lot of tight/giveway bits (some of which are not very obvious until you're right on top of them - the A382 up to Moreton is definitely guilty of this)

Lovely scenery though in some parts and often see a few nice cars cruising around enjoying it (various TVRs, astons, evos etc etc) smile

Don't forget guys that the whole of the moor is subject to a 40mph limit and the BiB regularly enforce it.

Only the unfenced areas, if you can see far enough ahead for sheep, horses and cattle, chances are that can see Scamera operators too!

This is a brilliant route that can be extended a little further, from Callington take the Kelly Bray road to Launceston then head to Tavi via Milton Abbott, a great one at six in the morning apart from haybaling time! biggrin

Sadly saturday I plan to be very hung over due to birthday celebrations the night before. Even if I am up early I know I will be in no state to get behind the wheel until at least after lunch. biggrin

Went to the Autojumble at Beaulieu, Left at the crack of dawn, on the coast road didn't see another car until past Lyme. Great bit of road. Only in my non turbo Wagon at that time though.

Although tough to tell, this was taken on the Hexworthy Tor car park I hinted at earlier in this thread

and this is more typical Dartmoor - This is just round the corner from Okehampton camp - nice for a drive to go up and have a look around as the road goes up to proper wild north dartmoor, but is not a "driving road" at all.... This is a real old shot of my car though - 3+ years old. The one above has updated front bumper, etc.

i do this route quite often in the summer on bike or in car, some great roads and views! though the best route is always one you've not done before, dartmoor is like a drivers/bikers paradise, theres long straights, hills, blind crests, twisty bits, just give yourself a couple hours and drive, taking the odd turning that you've not taken before and you will discover some great roads that dont get as congested on the nicer days! yelverton to caddover bridge is a great twisty road but does get busy on a nice day

Nice pics of cars in a great part of the country. Except in a few places I tend to go into "silent running" mode on the moor due to all the moving hazards.

Here's my p&j on a rare run out, parked at Bonehill Rocks. Fantastic views to West and South on a summer evening.
