Hi all,

Just wondering what you guys think the best diesel for motorway driving is, I have a 120 mile round trip to work and back 95% of which is all motorway. I have used the company Toyota Avensis and whilst its not exactly exciting it does hit the high 50mpg's and even low 60mpg's at 70 on the run. I was therefore wondering what would get the same sort or mpg's (or better if poss!!) in comfort. It doesn't have to be anything overly exciting to be fair as it will purely be for going to work on the motorway and I am getting something to replace the TT as a fun car, so the only important points are:

Highest possible mpg at 70mph

Comfortable and quiet for the long drive.

Ta in advance,

HF

I have used it several times going to my Head Office in Grantham. The previous owner, a Sales Director from the local ship yard used it to visit shipping businesses all around the country. Both him and me maintain how nice it is to drive on a run, the seats are very supportive but not restrictive. There is room to stretch your left leg out between the clutch pedal & footrest (important for me having broken my left leg 3 times!).

I usually arrive at Grantham late morning & still feel fresh enough for a days work.

Once you're passed Exeter, the fuel indicator creeps up from mid 50s to over 60 mpg, I have averaged 61mpg from Falmouth, going to Grantham & back.

Any German diesel is going to fulfill these requirements. Can highly recommend the BMW diesels as mentioned. I have got 50mpg out of a 3 litre touring 3 series, so even the big ones are quite economical. Probably the most economical diesel for motorway use is going to be something with the 1.4 TDI engine in it - Polo for example. Probably won't be as quiet or comfortable as a 3 series.
