Hi all you west country cider swilling types. Friendly greetings from Essex.

One of my partners in our Radical has a flat in the middle of Bath and I am taking SWMBO there for the Xmas market in 3 weeks or so.

Last time we stayed we went by train, but this time she wants the boot available for the shopping ! yikes

The flat overlooks Abbey Green, so right in the middle. I'm stuck however for somewhere to park from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.

Any suggestions from locals in the know would be much appreciated. He has a parking permit but I don't think visitors permits are available for central zone permit holders.

Manvers Street is 24hr and a very short walk. It's next to the police station so the above ground bit should be pretty safe. It has just been remodelled, haven't been in the lower section for a while, last time I was it had some people sleeping rough in it.

Thanks for that, I'll check it out.

I did see thst the Station has a car park which is about £12.00 a day. That would seem a good option if I can pay for 3 days up front.

Paying for 3 days parking up front at Bath station is not a problem. Not sure I would leave my car there for that length of time though !

Oh really.

I did think about the Waitrose car park that is shared with the hotel. Could try the old lost ticket one and pay for just one day.

I meant to call Bath Parking and see what they suggest.

It's a problem if you are staying right in the centre, and it's the Christmas market weekend and I suspect heaving as a result!

You're staying at the Hilton? Oh.

Do you need easy access to the car during the stay or is it a case of parking it and leaving it for 3 days?

Edit: The podium (Waitrose/Hilton) car park has a 4 hour limit before penalty charges I think.

Edit 2: The car park under the new shopping centre looks good for your needs: http://www.southgatebath.com/getting-here.aspx and is pretty close to Abbey Green.

We are borrowing a flat actually in Abbey Green (in the archway if you know Abbey Green) so can't rely on a hotel to help me out.

The shopping centre might be a good idea, I'll check it out. We won't be using the car from arriving on Friday to leaving on Sunday. Just didn't want to struggle with bags and stuff on the train. I normally park in the big pay and display towards the top of the town if I am a day visitor, but I don't think you can do long stay stuff.

The alternative is to swap cars with my mate as he has a central zone permit. But being Christmas Market time I suspect even finding somewhere to use that might be tough. He normally parks right beside the Royal Baths.

Still, looking forward to a short break in a fabulous city.

Ah, I see, I read your "shared with the hotel" as "the hotel you're staying in".

Old friend of mine runs the guest house in Abbey Green, nice little corner of Bath.

Alternative plan: leave car at my house, I drop you to Chippenham station, 10 minutes to Bath. (depending on dates!)

Oh yes, Southgate, I had forgotten that one - brand new and with proper size spaces and cameras - Waitrose is a real squeeze with a big car. Southgate does have a lovely and narrow entrance on it (not much room between the kerbs, so mind those alloys). £12 a day. Or just park outside the parking zone and take a refreshing walk into town and buy £36 of hand-made chocolates at Minerva Chocolates, mmmmm.

Mate - you can park FOC up around Sion Hill and it's a nice enough area that you'd be fine leaving your car around there - don't park in Waitrose car park the pricer is horrendous. The new car park under SouthGate is very nice and safe, but I don't know what the price is like. Failing all that send me a PM and I'll give you a couple of visitors permits for Zone 6 which is pretty much the center but on the other side (you don't need a permit for Sunday).

Aw you guys are great.

Thanks very much for the advice. I'll do some working out over the next few days.

It seems my options are

1. Southgate car park (which is the new shopping centre)
2. Park up Sion way and walk in
3. Station car park
4. The kind offer of visitors permits.

PH really is great for this sort of thing and when I show SWMBO she pretends to understand why I spend so much time here.

That's the ticket.

Only one thing to add to that - walking into town from Sion hill (dead posh area) is fine. Walking back up might be a pain with a lot of shopping.

I suspect that might be a cab ride with what she has planned for me over that weekend!

The planners really messed up the junctions where the Southgate car park entrance & exit sits. I'd avoid it during shopping hours, as some people have queued for 90mins+ to get out!

Simplest & cheapest long stay car park is Charlotte Street, though it's a bit of a walk to Abbey Green (though not as far as Sion Hill).

Don't park in Victoria Park overnight unless you love the thrill of gambling whether your car gets vandalised or not. However, the road at the western end is lit and has houses on one side, and is restriction-free.

Enjoy your weekend!

Hardly any snow or ice at the moment. A few mm on top of the hills is about the worst of it.

I'm a few miles east but there's been no more snow overnight and the roads are all clear.

I'm a few miles west, no snow on the roads but it was -2 when I drove in so minor roads may be icy.
