Here's a bit from the Bristol Evening Post today.

Seems they really want to funnel all traffic up and down Whiteladies Road in order to grind everything to a halt. My logic says dissipate traffic, have decent bus and cycle network and problems will ease. But what do I know, I only drive all day every day...

IT'S ALL CHANGE ON WHITELADIES ROUTE

CONSULTATION has begun on major changes to the transport infrastructure of Whiteladies Road as part of the £70 million Greater Bristol Bus Network scheme.

The proposals include wholesale changes to parking along the length of the road, a series of banned turns and new bus lanes.

A new outbound bus lane between Whatley Road and Apsley Road would see the loss of almost 50 parking spaces at peak travel times, while new restricted parking is planned for the whole road.

Residents and business owners have been sent plans and the proposals are today being thrown open to public debate.

Council officials stress that this is only the first consultation but the plans are already dividing opinion.

They have been branded "horrifying" amid fears they may cause more problems than they solve.

Parking in the outbound bus lane would be banned at peak hours – expected to be from 7am to 9.30am and 4.30pm to 6pm – but would be available at other times, although the number of spaces would be reduced from 78 to 73.

Parking along the whole of the road could become time restricted, with either one- or two-hour parking limits and no return for another two hours.

The council hopes this would reduce the number of people stopping and parking all day, increasing the parking available for shorter visits, bringing more trade to shops.

But some businessmen are unsure. Matt Clark, manager of Easy Living Furniture on Whiteladies Road, said: "From what I have seen I was horrified that they were going to turn this into a bus lane, because the parking is so tight around here anyway.

"We have a shop in Cribbs Causeway and we lose custom to them because of a lack of parking here, so with the bus lane it is going to make it even worse.

"It would be more beneficial to have time-restricted parking, though, because so many cars are parked here day-in, day-out for all day.

"But the majority of people who come to this store don't live around here and aren't likely to take a bus to go furniture shopping. I think it is going to create more problems than it is going to solve."

Downhill from the proposed bus lane, there are plans to ban cars making left turns from Whiteladies into St Paul's Road and Tyndall's Park Road, turns from Tyndall's Park Road into Whiteladies, and right turns from Cotham Hill into Whiteladies Road.

Right turns into St Paul's Road would be banned except for buses.

Up the hill, left turns from Westbury Road into Redland Hill would also be banned, as well as turns into the Parry's Lane slip road.

Other proposals include a new zebra crossing at the junction with West Park and more pedestrian crossings between Redland Park Church and Tyndale Baptist Church.

The unnamed road that cuts across the Downs by the water tower would be pedestrianised.

Thats what you get when you let idiots run a city. They seem hell bent on driving the city back into the dark ages. What with this, which would make a business on the road less able to compete, leading to people driving out to Cribbs, and the workplace parking scheme, which will drive business out to Wales and Gloucester, they really are doing such damage. The only people who will like this is First Bus and those who want car free roads so they can cycle everywhere.
I cannot see how they think business can work with these restrictions.

Insane. Ever been to Hagley Road in birmingham? This is what Whiteladies will end up like. Does not bear thinking about. Will completely ruin the place. Businesses wil die.
Id be intrigued to know what the major problem is anyway ?- its not as if its gridlock every day. And by cutting off right and left turn routes along Whiteladies traffic will try and by pass whiteladies earlier and thus directly in to residential areas. Complete madness. Haven't the council got better things to spend their money on in this area like primary schools anyway?

What the hell have BCC got against right turns at the moment?

Most of Brislington has had the right turns removed on the A4 to direct traffic into the congestion?

Weird idiots with no brains, then they close roads for some crap scheme or other and get the diverted traffic to join the congestion before using the retail park to turn around bloody madness.

If global warming and climate is the top of their agenda then do not stick vehicle upon vehicle in the same damn direction going nowhere. Also it is about time they understood that cars are made to be more eco friendly at a certain speed not stuck in tailbacks.

+1 to all of you, it's farking mental and is going to push parking and traffic onto residential streets. Of course this means people will acquiesce to the planned residents parking schemes more readilyrolleyes Which will have a knock on effect throughout the surrounding areas.

We'll just have to use the Whiteladies Road By-Pass (AKA Pembroke Road).

I think the plan is from moles working for South Glos Council in Bristol City. If they carry on as they are they'll drive all the shoppers out to Cribbs and the office workers to Stoke Gifford. They can then put up gates to shut Bristol off from the rest of the country. They've already screwed the light rail plans and the park and ride at the top of the M32.

Going off on a tangent I had to go and see a householder in Inns Court this week. He told me that the planning offier who came to see him did not drive and came and returned by bus. So whereas I took less than 1/2 house from and to the city centre, it must have taken her the best part of all morning. This is the barmy mindset that we have to put up with.
