I did not get the house I offered on in Devon a month or so back so have continued my search for something in the deeper SW.

Found a lovely new place in Hornick Hill (between St Austell and Newquay) and wondered if anyone on here knows the area and can comment on it? As before would like a town with some nightlife (bars and restaurants as opposed to nightclubs) nearby (20 mins or so in a cab) and possibly somewhere not too far where I'd find a gym, cafe etc etc. St Austell is around 3 miles away and Newquay 13 so am guessing those things are catered for? So what is the area like?

Had a mate who lived in Lanjeth just down the road. It's old clay pit country, can get a bit bleak during the winter but generally ok.

St Austell used to be quite nice but the regeneration of the town has taken about 10 years and ruined the place. Not been there for a while, it may have improved, it certainly will eventually.

Newquay is quiet in the winter and great in the summer to visit.

Truro may be your best bet, especially for eating out.

Pete's hit the nail on the head, clay pit country is a bit remote and bleak, St Austell has died since the industry has shrunk.

Newquay is great to visit but annoying to live there in the summer and dead in the winter. Truro is nice, lots of outlying villages but poor public transport/parking.

Great value properties in the villages around Camborne/Redruth but the towns themselves are not too great.

I live in St Ives and i am looking move around the Truro area with a radius of about 10 miles to get closer to work, I have looked at loads of areas and would agree with the clay country being a bit bleak, Feel free to drop me a mail if you need any thoughts on any places you are considering to view.

I work all over devon/cornwall (installing/service Aga cookers)comments are bang on. St Austel is run down and Truro is a nightmare to get around in the summer, especialy if its a dull day! Roseland peninsula is very nice but not much night life.Have you considered the outskirts of Falmouth?

Sounds like your best bet would be to look around Mylor / Feock area. Close enough to Truro and readily accessible. Otherwise in the A390, A30, A39 triangle around the Northwest of Truro.

I'd be tempted to rent first whilst you're looking as some lovely areas such as St Mawes quickly become a pain to get to / from if you want to frequent Truro.

Martins are one of the biggest rental co's
Jackson's Stopps & Staff, Staggs, Lilicrap Chilcott (If you can bear their OTT blurb) are the larger mid - upper end agents.

Worth subscribing to the West Briton for properties.

Consider paying a 'sourcer' as many properties don't make it to the open market
