Hi Guys/Gals looking to have a long weekend away soon with the misses, Not been to Devon since I was a kid 30+ years ago but have really fond memories of Combe Martin and Barnstaple.. Other than those to places can anyone recommend anywhere that may be worth a try, Pref with some decent shops nearby (for her) and some decent pubs and driving roads (for me) Pref choice of accom would be a caravan.
Many thanks in advance.
Ian.

Barnstaple has masses of shops and the big covered market. Lots of side streets and little places, cafes aplenty too.

Based near there you can hit Saunton Sands for a fab beach, Croyde for beach and village with some good pubs, Puttsborough sands, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe, Lynto and Lynmouth, Lee Bay etc.

Some great drives over Exmoor too. Blackmoor Gate and around that area were huge fun on bikes.

Lots to do and see down there biggrin

If you want a deal on accommodation try Croyde Bay Holiday Village - half board with as much as you can eat for brekkie and evening meal (both self service and many courses with lots to choose from). It's only £38.65 per person per night (minimum 2 night stay).

Decent parking and plenty of facilities but on a tiny scale compared with normal holiday camp places. Only about 140 people there so fairly quiet.

Nothing looks better then East Devon, South Hams, or Exeter Cathedral green on a sunny day.

Croyde is quality, had a good few surf/camping holidays there (usually stay at the campsite behind the post office for easy access to beach/pub), pubs are nice but a bit pricey as i think the only 2 pubs in the place are owned by same person.
However the roads around there are tight and often clogged up..

Salcombe's absolutely lovely. Although not the biggest shopping place, there are a lot of 'upmarket' clothes shops.

3 pubs if you walk along the Georgeham road to The Manor smile

I've been nowhere in dorset which looks as nice in devon. Sorry, but it's my opinion. You've just got a different landscape. Not the rich green pastures and rolling hills towns like east devon or south hams. It's a lot more open, a lot more 'plain' in dorset.

Dartmouth is lovely - take the boat trip to Totnes if the weather is nice.

Then book yourself the taster menu at The New Angel! Sublime food.

For nice beaches and seaside action you can't beat setting yourself up in St. Ives or Penzance, then visiting Sennen, Porthcurno et al. Lots to see and do as well. When you're in Sennen you might as well pop to Lands End although I found it a bit of an anti-climax. Nice ice creams though...

We enjoyed a week staying at this mews house in Penzance. Ideal for a petrolhead as it comes with an integrated garage.
