Maharaja Purton is great!

I've always liked jewel in the crown.

The Mrs likes biplob but their curries are a bit too smooth, sweet and coloured for me.

Purple onion is overpriced and not great, and I've only been in the khyber when really drunk.

Excellent, thanks for the tips. For several years I've only ever had Biplob curries (takeaway usually), but it's been so long since I tried anywhere else I wasn't sure where else to go. I'm not unhappy with Biplob, but sometimes a change can be good smile

Maharajah in Purton is easily the best in Swindon and surrouning. It's the only curry house I will elect to go to.

I have to vouch for Aby's on Farringdon Road as being great, their Pathia is to die for

after hearing great things about Biplob we went down there. It was dank, damp, musty and smelt very unhealthy. An overriding smell of mildew also it appears a death trap as we could not see an escape route should there be a fire. The food gave the majority of the party very bad gut and as a result none of us will go there again. Was such a shame after hearing good things about them.

If you fancy Thai for a change, I would recommend Thai Orchid in Old Town; it is quite cosy but the food is excellent, with that fresh/spicy taste that marks good east asian food. Friendly service too smile

Odd but we had exactly the same experience at Biplob. Generally good reviews but when we went they seemed to be in a hurry to get rid of us (party of 8) and the food was poor. So many to choose from it would be a long time before we went back.
I can recommend the Joy Balti in Calne.

It's good - I used to prefer The Ancient Raj in Cricklade, but we've not been in there for ages. Spice Express in Purton is good for takeaway. Our Indian friends always rated Mela in Old Town - I had a feeling it had closed down, but the website is still up. Spice Merchant on the B4040 out of Malmesbury was quite nice last time we ate there too.

I've always referred to Biplob as "plip-plop" after one very unfortunate meal there. I wasn't right for days.

Another vote for the Jewel in the Crown here. It was my local, and I never had a bad dish, but it has been a while since I was last there.

Picklejohns was good, but that's no longer there...so a bit pointless me mentioning it really!

Mela is still there, could be different people though.

The place that everyone said at purton or Jewel in the Crown, both probably the only venues to offer consistency by sounds of it.
