A family friend has done us a big favour, and we'd like to repay them with a round of golf for two at a really nice course.

Somewhere they wouldn't normally stump up the rhino to play themselves, but is friendly, local-ish to Gloucester, and a bit 'special'.

Somewhere with 'the Royal' in the title would be good (you know what I mean!).

In terms of professional fees, it would have cost us about £300 - £400 elsewhere, and he didn't charge us a penny. Happy to spend a few quid to give them a really nice day out.

You have to consider handicaps as well with many places. Because our work golfing group has a "mixed" set of handicaps (best is around 8 and worst is 28 (or worse....)) we have to be careful when selecting courses for our end of season day. We're around Bristol this year, but those courses may not be the kind of standard you are looking for? A lot of the creme de la creme courses will insist on offical club handicap certificates.

As for creme de la creme golf course suggestions, afraid I have none and not familiar with the area. Know a few nice ones down in Devon/Cornwall though.

Cheers for that, I didn't think of that....

In which case, I wonder if a better thing might be a round with the club pro, to include a handicap certificate?

Basically, the chap retired a couple of years ago and has got quite in to golf, plays a couple of times a week for fun. I'm sure he'd like a round with a good club pro though, at a nice course....

Any ideas?

I'm sure a "lesson" based on 18 holes of golf would be appreciated. Just not sure where up in your neck of the woods. Probably need to spend an hour or so googling for golf clubs around your area.

the one that stands out is going to be celtic manor. 15 mins form the other side of the bridge. Otherwise there are plenty of "good" courses about. the Bristol, Kendleshire, Long ashton ( not as flash but can be very challenging)

Yes, Celtic Manor - this would be the course!!
some good offers there at the moment as well.

monty's course for £18 !! a real bargain and the 2010 Ryder cup course £109

Failing that, 'The players club' just outside bristol is a euro-tour course and a 'proper' challenge. quite resonable as well.

Weston used to be pay and play (dunno if it still is) and it's right next to the beach so links golf, greens are excellent and a good course for any standard especially when the wind gets up.

I think the best course in Glos is http://www.mgcnew.co.uk/

It won't woo someone such as the 2010 course at the Manor would, but nevertheless a good course to play

if not this then http://www.club-noticeboard.com/chepstow/ is a cracking round of golf too.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I've had a look at Celtic Manor, and it really does look fantastic.

If you did somebody a favour and were rewarded with a round for two on the Ryder Cup course, a couple of months before kick-off, would you be pretty pleased?

Just need to double check with Mrs Maser (it's for her father), and we'll get it booked I think.

One of our clients recommended us to another company who ended up putting £100k our way - we're taking him to Celtic Manor and he seems rather delighted at the prospect.
