Looks like the sneaky buggers have put a camera 75 metres before the existing camera by the Esso and Toyota garages. I would guess this is to cut down the casualties caused by panic braking, which of course would not occur if the first camera was not bloody there in the first place.

Not sure about that one Daz.
However, I went to a terrible fatal there about a year ago, young lad had just got some chips from over the road, racing cars, lost his leg and other bits and bobs. Not nice at all. Whether the camera is going because of that I don't know, but I certainly haven't heard anything. I will make some enquiries.....

I used the term sneaky due to the original poster mentioning the gatso being behind a sign.

The most sneaky monitoring on that road is the police cars and scamera vans parked up taking your photo as you go over the flyover by the Post Office (when going towards Bristol city centre). Exactly the same stretch of road as the newspapers got a photo of a scamera van on pavement/double yellows a year or so ago.

Keep up with the proper road policing mike.

I got caught by real policemen going over that flyover one Sunday aftyernoon a few years ago - PC Tim somebody issued the producer and I got three points. 'Twas a sneaky ambush - I prefer a straight tailchase

Drove past here last night for a look.

It looks like a GATSO, only slightly smaller and with a slightly less square box.

As mentioned in the original post on t'other thread, its right behind a sign.

The really weird thing is that the sign is quite high up and it looks like the camera has been put on an extra long pole purely for the reason of getting it out of sight! I thought this wasn't allowed? The pole is, I estimate, twice as high as an "ordinary" GATSO.

Can't comment on whether or not its painted yellow, as it was dark at the time.

There's definately a big trench been dug and filled in the pavement, leading from the base of the pole to the road approx 10-20m further on. Would this suggest that its a GATSO triggered by a inductive loops rather than radar?

Just spoken to my mum, who saw something on the local news. Apparently its one of a flock of new digital cameras being put in around Bristol / Gloucestershire and they're all going to be on these extra tall posts (presumably to "hide them in plain sight")

Typically, there's nothing on the Avon & Somerset scam site about them...

So is this a false alarm and are these in fact just signs that flash "SLOW DOWN", and if you do slow down, you get a and a KitKat in the post?

Hmmm - 'fraid not! They are also on the A4 over towards Bath, the other side of Brislington, before the roundabout with the dual carrageway ring road.

I see that they have also taken account of the way people damage these things: taller poles, nowhere to hang a tyre etc etc

I agree, you do need to be looking a lot harder to spot these ones

How quickly do these installations get integrated into the Road Angel database?

We're actively house hunting now - I'm fed up with living in what must be one of the worst run cities the Soviet Union.

I'm sure that sign contravenes the spirit, if not the letter, of the camera visibility guidelines. The sign is a "Road Narrows" - does the road narrow there? Don't think so.

Has this made the national media yet? If not Yertis is off up there tomorrow with his professional digital camera and the Sun's email address...

Just a note to any coppers reading - I'm running my local Neighbourhood Watch but to be frank I don't feel well disposed to helping prop up what is evidently descending into a Stalinist, Orwellian regime. If I'm caught by a hidden camera I'll be straight on the blower to tell them to stuff their Neighbourhood Watch were Charlie won't find it.

I've mellowed out now Mike. I think writing that post got it out of my system. Let them put their cameras where they will. Yellow cameras on tall poles will stress me out no longer.

The camera hiding behind whatever is disgraceful, and I have no time for it.
Problem is, we get the blame when we dont get the revenue to enable us to get more officers out of the box to police properly.
Government says that more police officers are on the street - rubbish, they are only covering their backs because more are retiring or leaving because they are fed up with constant abuse and lack of planning, or government excuses.
For instance, covering staple hill's patch (borders to wiltshire, city limit, hanham, and filton) one saturday night was me and another officer (acting sgt) in a single double crewed car- you can imagine what sort of a night it was. I am surprised we were not seriously hurt.
Very very minimal money ends up in the police coffers for the scameras and we get the lovely publicity because it says avon and somerset on the top of a summons.
Makes me
Don't give up, keep on with neighbourhood watch.
PC Warr is the local bod, well, I think he is. If you have any comments and stuff, email me off forum and I can see what we can do.

Apart from burning down the government......

Hi,

I was going down from Bristol to Weston on the M5 and got pulled over by the Bobbies. It was about 12.30am and no one on the road.

I was clocked at 102 but had been doing a tad more.

The thing is they did the usual lecture, tutting etc and not making eye contact, but after eating humble pie and me shitting myself for 10mins (seemed like an hour) he said 'well I spose it's late, no-one on the road, clear night, we'll let you off this time'

The moral of the story was I really did take it easy, for bloody ages AND I went away with the utmost respect for their quality decision and generally would support coppers in any other situation.

With cameras I'd of got banned, fined AND bloody hate those PIGS.

They are loosing the support of the average Joe because of something that's just associated with them.

Sorry rant over.

Mike
